Asia Flu Vaccine
To Be Available
By Oclober 15 ;
Washington (in Industry
sources said today there is likely
to be "quite a lot" of vaccine
available to protect the public
against Asiatic flu by Oct. 15.
These sources told the United
Press it would be a "pretty good
guess" as many as 25 million
shots would be produced by mid
October. After that they, said
drug makers will be geared to
turn out five million shots a
week if the public is using the
vaccine.
But they pointed out the six
major drug firms making the
vaccine are taking what amounts
to a huge gamble by investing
$10 million in full-scale produc
tion without assurance the pub
lic will take the shots.
Production Not Subsidised
; They noted the government is
not subsidizing ' production and
the risk is strictly the industry s
own, taken at the government's
urging.
They said if the public does
not start widespread use of the
vaccine by October or November
at the latest, the industry will
have to start tapering off produc
tion. That possibility is a major
reason why the government and
drug makers are gearing for an
all-out campaign to sell the pub
lic on the value of getting the
vaccine shots.
The U. S. Public Health Serv
ice is preparing to use posters,
radio, newspapers and commun
ity organizations to urge every
American who can to get the
vaccine shots as' soon as they -are
available.
The Health Service says one
shot of the vaccine is all that is
recommended," and should pro
vide at least 70 per cent protec
tion against getting the Asiatic
flu.
day with conflicting claims and
denials.
Those who say they could see
the 'Pacific ocean from the top
of the 14,162-foot peak were con
tradicted by Ike Eichorn, of
Redding, Calif., who said engin
eers have proved that would be
impossible. He said the Coast
range would obstruct such a
distant view. '
Offers 'Longest View'
But there were better found
ed claims for the statement by
Chap Wentworth, Dunsmuir,
Calif., publisher, that Mt. Shasta
offers "the longest view in Am-"
erica and possibly the. entire
world" because of the absence
of smog and because the Sacra
mento valley is long and has no
obstructions.
Eric Allen Jr., managing ed
itor of the Medford Mail Trib
une, entered the discussion with
the report that "a long time ago"
Boy Scouts climbed Mt. Hood
and Mt. Shasta and set off flares
or fireworks at night. Allen said
each-could see-the other's sig
nals.; Mt. Hood, east of Portland,'
Oregon's highest peak at 11.245
feet, is more than - 300 airline
miles from Mt, Shasta. -
George Schrader, former pres-.
ident of the Siskiyou County
Historical Society, told of a sur
vey, made by heliograph in 1875.
Schrader said reflections from.
the instrument were picked up
on St. Helena, 192 airline miles
to the southwest. At that time,
the feat was acclaimed - as the.
longest known visual observa
tion ever made for survey pur
poses." : -;

Moving of Tillamook
Facility Protested
Washington ATI Sens. Wayne
Morse and Richard Neuberger,
Oregon Democrats, Wednesday
appeared before an armed ser
vices subcommittee to protest
any move of the Northwest Tech
nical Institute Air Force train
ing center from Tillamook, Ore.,
to Texas.
Morse and Neuberger said
that Oregon had been discrim
inated against in locating de
fense and military installations.
They also said a General Ac
counting office preliminary sur
vey has shown that training at
Tillamook would be cheaper per
man that at Lackland AFB, Am-
arillo, Tex.
No decision was reached but
the Oregon lawmakers said it
was their hope the Air Force
would reconsider its desire to
move the facility from Tillamook.
