communiques from the Wash
ington chitchat front say there
is a new bounce in the step of
the secretary of state since an
auburn - haired nightclub singer
began burdening the airwaves
with a song titled "I Made a
Fool of Myself Over John Foster
Dulles."
The song was written by Ken
Welch for Carol Burnett come
dienne stint at the Blue Angel
nightclub with the idea of spoof
ing the teen-age worshipping of
rock 'n' roll singers. The pair
decided it would be a humorous
twist to portray a girl wor
shipping someone distinguished.
Miss Burnett has had the
song in her act for more than
a month and has sung it twice
on the NBC Tonight show and
once on the CBS Ed Sullivan
show. After her first broadcast
last week, the NBC people got
a call from a Dulles aide saying
the secretary wanted a record
ing. O They rushed one, and also

Where in this country do the
most violent thunderstorms take
place? There was one the other
day down in Monmouth county,
New Jersey, that made the na
tives feel as if they were spend
ing a busy night on a battle
front. Really terrific. Not as bad
as some I went through in Ar
kansas. However, the worst
thunderstorm I was ever in was
in Atlantic, Iowa, when on a
transcontinental .auto trip. That
storm lasted nine hours. Never a
let up all that time in thunder
claps and lightning flashes.

If Rex Harrison isn't playing
Prof. Higgins when you see "My
Fair Lady," you really haven't
seen the show that is the great
est musieal hit of this century.
It is the performance of Harri
son that made the show what it
is today. Speaking of perform
ances, what do you name as the
six greatest stage performances
of tie past five years? I haven't
tried to compile such a list but
if and when I do I certainly will
include Rex Harrison in "My
Fair Lady" and Lloyd Nolan as
Captain Queeg in 'The Caine
Mutiny Court-Martial."

She was married on Wednes
day. Each of her three children
were born on Wednesday. So
says a subscriber, who adds that
she "couldn't be happier." This
brings to mind the poetic proph

dentally Aly Khan is believed by

Advice
Bella Darva, European beauty,
who has inspired the interest of
quite a few very wealthy men,
recently offered the following
advice to young women wishing
to do likewise: "A girl must have
a certain chfc to keep a wealthy
man interested. And she must
like his conversation."
Horses and Women
Peggy Cummins, the clever
and charming Irish actress, has
a tendency to grow a trifle
plump. But she doesn't. Her hus
band sees to that. Peggy, now 30.
has a dress she bought when she
was 21 and her figure was su
perbly streamlined. Every time
it seems Peggy is growing a little
plumper her husband suggests
she try on ' her nine-year-old
dress. She does, and if it is tight,
she goes on a diet. A very clever
streamlining idea.
Talent Schools to
Open on Sept. 9;
Teachers Listed
Talent Talent- public schools
will open Sept. 9, with busses
running on the same schedule
as last year, according to R. B.
Parr, superintendent.
The cafeteria will be open the
first day of school.
High school students who are
working in the fruit harvest
may. continue working, but
some classes will be closed to
late registrants, Parr said. All
school work must be made up
when entering school late, he
added.

'Tiny-Tot' Swim
Demonstration Held
The fifth and largest "tiny-tot"
demonstration of the summer
was held at the YMCA Monday
night for parents of young
swimming students who attend
Tuesday and Friday morning
classes.
Twenty - seven children aged
6 to 8 years gave demonstrations
for 57 parents and guests.
Gordon Williams, physical di
rector, explained methods of
teaching and Miss Jan Stevens,
assistant instructor, carried out
methods and procedures with
the children.
Another "tiny-tot" demonstra
tion will be held for parents
Monday, Aug. 19, at 8 p.m. The
public also is invited.
Hartford Has Largest
Revenue Collection
Hartford. Conn. (IF) Mrs.
Ann A. Mitchell, federal collec
tor of customs for Connecticut,
reported that the city of Hart
ford recorded the largest reve
nue during fiscal 1957. Hartford
was the only inland city included
in the report, which also listed
the port cities of New Haven,
New London, and Bridgeport.' ;

Miriam R. What a household
mine is! I am 16, old enough to
see that niy parents have made
a big mess. I have a younger
sister of 12 and a brother of 10
and they are so spoilted it's just
terrible. I try to make them do
things like keeping their own
things neat, but they talk back to
me and Mother always sticks up
for them.
My father doesn't come until
late at night, and on week ends
all we ever hear out of him is
"Don't bother me?" He never
takes any of us out, but he is
always ready to spank anyone
who misbehaves.
The worst of it is that my
mother doesn't even seem to
care. She says -as long as Dad
supports us, that's enough. What
more should we expect? Well,
I'm no dope and I have eyes
to see that things aren't that
way in every family. My friends
all have fathers who care about
them.
Mrs. F. M. Miriam has been
a big headache to me for the
past three weeks. She's taken it
into her -head that everyone in
the family must be made over
from the ground up and none of
us knows a minute's freedom.
It happens that my husband
has had some serious business

I troubles recently. It's not his
I fault that he must work late and
is irritable with the children. He
needs complete rest on his days
off.
For my part, 1 prefer that my
husband shouldn't interfere be
tween me and the children. It's
true they are difficult, maybe
spoiled, but when he steps in, he
always makes matters worse. I
have the patience to deal with
them and he doesn't.
I have tried to explain to
Miriam that her father loves all
of us, even if he is short-tempered,
but she doesn't under
stand. The Council: We gather that
Miriam has a legitimate beef
and this household could well
stand some changes.
Mrs. F. F..'s verdict in favor
of Dad is all wrong. It is like
saying that the children would
be just as well off if their father
were dead and they lived on his
insurance money. Besides, no
child is so gullible as to believe
that a statement of love con
stitutes the real thing.
Love is built up through daily
interchange of words and ac
tions. The child who has no ex
perience of tenderness in words
and gestures, no experience of
sharing things with a parent is
deprived of love no matter
what feelings may be locked in
that parent's heart.
It appears that Mr. F. M., with
his wife's encouragement, has

Wards to Construct
Service Station
Construction of a tire and bat
tery service station for Mont
gomery Ward and company of
Medford will begin next week
at 104 South Bartlett St., accord
ing to J. J. Materie, manager.
The station, which will also
care for seat cover and oil pur
chasers at Wards, will contain
three stalls to service both large
trucks and passenger cars, Mat
eria said.
Remodeling of the warehouse
and another building on the lot
will allow for the new service
and make room for customer
parking. Cost was estimated at
$11,000.

from his children as they have
from him. The "complete rest"
he takes on his days off is prob
ably just a form of brooding.
If he will try to give his
wholehearted attention to the
children, instead of acting as of
ficial spanker, he will win many
emotional rewards, relief from
the stress of' his worries, and a
fresher viewpoint. He may even
find the objectivity he needs to
tackle his problems in a better
way.

States in 1956. The non-profit or
