new food would be released
that of the vegetable-rich wat
ers off Antarctica. There, today,
the waters contain from three
to four times as much organic
matter per acre than the most
fertile farm or forest land in
the world. With increasing pres
sure on the world's food output,
this microscopic plant life could
be utilized to stave off the hun
ger of the expanding multitudes.

represents a tremendous dis-pro-portion
to the world's surface.
Resting upon this continent is
the greatest artificial weight in
the world: the ice cap which in
many instances is more than
two miles deep and extends over
an area twice the size of Au
stralia! At one time, this huge cap
caved in the crust of -the earth,
lowering the level of the land.
The removal of a 1,000-foot lay
er of the ice since then by ris
ing temperatures has brought
about an "up-doming," state the
experts. The plastic layer be
neath the earth's crust flowed
back to equilibrium, forcing the
land to rise again. As a result
beaches 100 feet above sea level
are quite common. But even -so,
the continental shelf around An
tarctica is still by far the low
est which surrounds any of the
earth's great land masses. It's
outer edge is roughly 2,500 feet
deep in contrast to the 500-foot
depth of the banks off most con
tinents. Experts interpret this to mean
that Antarctica has sunk under i
the weight of its ice and may
rise considerably if the load is
lightened.
The melting of that ice cap
may hold the clue to the world's
future. And in many ways.
With the retreating of the ice
in the north Polar region, Can
ada is up-doming, too. In fact,
Hudson's Bay may Vanish alto
gether unless a new ice age sets
in.
This we know: Scandinavia
was still ice-coverea at tne
dawn of civilization and today
that region is habitable and ver
dant. Should the glacier ice of Ant
arctica retreat, think of the im
plications! Believe me, that ice
cap is deep. Were a similar cap
to cover North America, even
our towering Rockies would ex
tend only 2,000 to 3,000 feet
at the most! Now if this water
tied up in Antarctica and Green
land were to be .released . . .
