MGM sound stages where fa
mous epics from "Raintree
County" back to "Dinner at
Eight" and "Grand Hotel" were
shot now features such "scenes'"
as ladies putting on lipstick or
opening refrigerator doors.
Though these movies are
shorter than the three-hour
epics, they're tougher to make,
according to Virgil Ellsworth,
production chief of the minute
spectacles.
Timing Difficult
"They're worse than feature
films," sighed Ellsworth on a
tour of MGM's busy new tele
vision unit. "The timing is so
difficult 58 seconds exactly.
And -the scenes are much more
critically viewed than a feature
film. The sponsor studies every
thing so closely."
Some days the electricians
spend as much as five hours
just to properly light the close
up of a product so it will be
shown to it best advantage.
Food scenes are big head
aches. Soup has to be steaming
beautifully, but if the shot isn't
successful a new pot of soup
has to be brewed.
"And often toast has to be
a color to make it look like
toast,'" Ellsworth added.
Talents Carried Over
The talents that go into MGM
feature movies, whom the make
up wizards who powder Ava
Gardner's nose to the designers
of lavish sets, now also work on
TV commercials.

erett Horton are among the per
formers in feature films who
now' emote over bowls of pan
cake flour.
"Just for one scene we had to
fly a girl 70 feet through the
air, enthused Ellsworth. "That
took three days to shoot. They
never could make commercials
like that in New York. But we
have all the MGM facilities for
use." .
An outdoor MGM set of 5th
ave. was used in a cosmetic
commercial; the set of a New
England waterfront was the lo
cation for a cake mix spiel.
Unusual Collection
Of Income Tax Tales
Pittsburgh W John H.
Bingler, district director of the
Internal Revenue Service, comes
up with an unusual collection Of
income tax stories every year
about this time. Here are Bun
gler's latest tales of befuddled
tax payers:
A Pittsburgh woman asked
the IRS if she could deduct the
cost of a wig. "Without it I'm
very nervous and the price of
nerve medicine is more than the
wig," she wrote. "Can it be con
sidered a medical expense?" The
IRS said no.
A taxpayer appeared at the
IRS office with a list of medical
deductions on his return. One of
the items was a set of false
teeth. "Can you offer proof of
these deductions?" a clerk asked.
The man promptly dropped his
false choppers on the desk.
A woman called to ask about
a joint return. A clerk began ex
plaining, but was interrupted
with the explanation: "No, I'm
not married. I want to know
about the return for my tavern.
It's a joint."
A young driver deducted sev
eral traffic fines. He offered this
explanation: "The local cops are
picking on me and I should be
allowed a deduction on account
of it." Not so, the IRS said.
Another taxpayer mailed in a
1943 return showing a $43 re
fund. He said the form appar
ently had been misplaced and
demanded his money. IRS offic
ials shook their heads and point
ed out there's a three-year limit
on refunds.
