Comet Mrkos Still Visible in Northwest

Sky-minded earth-dw&lers re
cently experienced a delightful
surprise when a second com
within a period, of four months
was observed in the northwest
ern sky!
A cable from K. A. Thernoe
m Copenhagen reporU the
covery of a new comet by A.
Mrkos. S. M. Laustsen also from
Copenhagen gave a second posi
tion on this same comet which
0has been given the number
1957d.
This celestial visitor, report
ed by Mrkos as third magnitude
and by Laustsen as second mag
nitude, was easily visible to the
naked eye. It appeared as a dif
fuse object with a nucleus or
central condensation called the
head and a rather short gaseous
tail.
Accural Position
Later cables from Thernoe at
Copenhagen report that accurate
positions .and daily motion of
Comet Mrkos (1957d) are being
obtained by astronomers Hoeg
and Laustsen.
Aug. 6, the comet had
reached first magnitude which
indicated that this unexpected
visitor was brightening and at
that observation was as bright
as the brighter stars.
From the Griffith Observa
tory, Dr. C. H. Cleminshaw re
ported that, "Airline pilot Peter
Cherbak saw a comet five de
grees east of the star Castor on
July 31 and Aug. 1. Clouds pre
vented confirmation until Aug.
4." A similar repert for Aug. 2
was made by A. V. Shatzel, di
rector of the Adler planetarium.
Many comets are seen each
year by people who study the
celtstial sphere telescopically,
but only' a small percentage of
those so observed become visible
to the naked eye. Comet Arend
Roland which was seen during
the latter part of April 1957,
people in this part of the world
was the first comet visible to
since 1910.
Seen in Oregon
On Friday evening, Aug. 9, a
number of Oregon residents ob
served Comet Mrkos shining
brightly low in the northwestern
sky. On Sunday evening, Aug.
11, the comet was barely dis
cernible to the naked eye, but
plainly visible when binoculars
were employed.
' Comets are unpredictable and
it would be difficult to say how
long this one may be visible;
probably a few days. However,
when the moon rises late enough
to give no interference, the
comet may appear brighter.
To locate this comet look to
the northwest about 8:30 p.m.
or as soon as it becomes dark.
Not far above the horizon and
directly beneath the bowl of the
Big Dipper shines this unex
pected celestial guest.
Those who observed Comet
Arend-Roland will find Ahis ex
perience helpful when locating
Comet Mrkos. It may be neces
sary to use binoculars.
Comet Mrkos is situated in the
part of the sky where the con
stellations, due to the earth s
rotation, seem to encircle the
North Star. The Comet, is de
scribing this large arc, will sink
beneath the horizon part of the
night, but should reappear in
the northeastern sky in the
hours before dawn.

say the 3,700,000 acres of South
western Colorado they sold the
federal government was "worth
some 537,500,000 $37 million
more than they were paid In
1873.
The value was put on the land
in Denver Tuesday by Ute rep
resentatives during the hearings
on their claims, and the claims
of other Indian nations in west
ern states who say they were
gypped on land sales.
They said the "fair market
value of the land" was deter
mined by a team of Colorado
historians and appraisers, head
ed by Gerald T. Hart of Denver,
a real estate consultant.

'Shasta' Test Again
Delayed 24 Hours
Las Vegas, Nev. IIP) Unfa
vorable winds again today
forced the Atomic Energy com
mission to call another 24-hour
delay in the firing of its "Shas
ta" nuclear device.
It marked a record number of
16 times that the test has been
postponed. Scientists resched
uled the shot to be fired from
a 500-foot tower for 5 a.m., p.d.t.
Thursday.
However, the AEC said it has
another device ready to fire and
would decide later today wheth
er to go ahead with the "Shasta"
test Thursday or trigger the
other device instead.
The AEC waited until the last
minute to postpone the much
delayed "Shasta" test in hopes
that the wind conditions would
improve.

is a 3,000-mile string of radar
stations stretching across the
top of North America to warn

POSTAL UNION MEETS
Ottawa (IP) Prime Minister
John Diefenbaker today opened
the 14th congress of the Univer
sal Postal Union here, the first
ever held in Canada. Some 300
delegates from 91 countries
packed the Senate chamber, of
the Parliament building to hear
Diefenbaker open the eight-week
conference. The delegates, most
ly high-ranking postal officials,
will meet twice daily.
