Improved Weather
Awaited To Remove
Body of Climber
Grindelwald, Switzerland
. iw Alpine experts will await
"halfway decent weather" be
fore attempting to recover the
body of Stefano Longhi from the
sheer north face of Mt. Eiger, it
was announced today.
Longhi is one of four climbers
who were stranded on the moun
tain by sudden snow last. week.
His body, dangling head down in
a tangle of climbing ropes, is
about 1,200 feet below the
mountain's peak.
Authorities here said they are
unwilling to risk the life of an
other climber by attempting
to recover Longhi's body before
the weather improves.
Two German climbers who
were caught on the peak have
vanished. A veteran glacier pilot
has been assigned to fly over
the crevasses, grooves and gul
lies criss-crossing the mountain
side for traces of their bodies.
Claudio Corti, the only one of
the four men who survived the
ordeal, was reported "resting
comfortably" in a hospital to
day. He is expected to recover.
Chamonix, France W
Two rescue columns left at dawn
today to try to save six climbers
missing on the ice-clad slopes
of Mount Blanc.
The first column headed for
the 13,530 foot high Aiguille
Verte Green Needle (peak of
the Mount Blanc massif) where
three Polish climbers were re
ported missing since Sunday
afternoon. ,
A violent thunderstorm swept
the Aiguile Verte at 5 p.m. Sun
day when the three Poles were
only 900 feet from the mountain
top.
Three other mountaineers, a
Yugoslav and two Poles, have
been missing since last Wednes
day on Mount Blanc. Their
names were not known.
Twelve persons already have
died and dozens have been in
jured in Alpine accidents this
year in France, officials reported.

Oregon Man Said
Victim of Suicide
In Chicago Hotel
Indianapolis, Ind. Iff) A
verdict of suicide was returned
today in the death of Everett B.
Sparks, 30, Forest Grove, Ore.,
who was found dead in his hotel
room after a gun battle in which,
three persons were wounded.
Sparks was killed with a shot
in the head in his 12th floor
room at the Sheraton-Lincoln
hotel, where he fought a 30-min-ute
battle of bullets with police
last Thursday.
Sparks began firing when a
detective and hotel executives
prepared to unmask him as a
check forger posing as a wealthy
contractor while living preten
tiously in hotels in many cities
across the nation.
Dr. Roy B. Storms, Marion
county coroner, said he based a
suicide verdict on results of a
police ballistics test of a .32-cal-iber
bullet found with blood on
it in Spark's hotel room. Sparks
clutched a .32 caliber gun in his
hand when his body was found.
None of the police weapons fired
through the doors at Sparks was
a .32 caliber gun.
Sparks shot two policemen
and a 19-year-old girl during a
hotel lobby gun battle and a sec
ond battle with police who tried
to flush him from his room with
tear gas and bullets.

Nation Gets Varied
Weather; Screaming
Winds Lash N. Dakota
By UNITED PRESS
A crazy-quilt assorted weather
blanketed the nation today, part
of the continuing pattern which
saw hammering thunderstorms
and screaming winds side-by-side
with clear evening skies in
which a comet flashed.
The U. S. Weather Bureau
said that winds estimated at 70
to 80 miles per hour buckled
a barn and an elevator near
Jamestown, N. D., while more
than an inch Of rain fell in the
area. A thunderstorm belt
stretched across the Dakotas and
Minnesota, dropping 2.53 inches
of rain at Grand Forks, N. D.
Comet Seen
In parts of Wisconsin, as well
as in New England and the Texas
coast, night time observers were
able to see Markos a third or
der comet. Good visibility ac
companied a movement of cool
Canadian air which extended
from eastern Wisconsin to Mew
England.
Elsewhere, a string of thunder
storms rattled along a broad path
down the Rockies and across the
lower Mississippi Valley, becom
ing less frequent in the south At
lantic coastal area. It was mostly
fair along the Pacific Coast.
Cooling Expected
Fair skies will prevail again
today west of the Rockies and
over most of the area east of the
Great Lakes and nofth of the
Mason-Dixon Line, where cool
ing also is expected. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms will
continue over most of the warm,
humid southern half of the coun
try, halting their westward
sweep at the Rockies.
Warmer temperatures are pre
dicted for the Pacific Northwest
as well as the upper Mississippi
Valley, with cooler readings in
the Dakotas.

MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE
Mid-East Said To
Be Test Center
London HP) Diplomatic offi-:
cials warned today that Soviet
Russia is fast turning the strate- i
gic Middle East into a new
"testing center" in the great
power conflict.-
This conclusion stemmed from
the disquieting Red arms build- i
up in the area, which is current-!
ly being stepped up anew by
Moscow under agreements with
Arab nations.
Coinciding with the arms
buildup is a stepped-up anti
Israel campaign in which mem
bers of the Supreme Soviet now
are reported to have joined.
Latest reports reaching Lon
don claim that Red arms thus
far delivered to Egypt and Syria
by far exceed the present needs
of their respective armies.
Moreover, Russia has begun
to increase the flow of naval
units to Arab nations, including
torpedo boat flotillas and long
range submarines which experts
feared would adversely affect
tha naval balance in the Eastern
Mediterranean.
