Dulles Says Job of
State Department Is
To Look Out for U.S.

State John Foster Dulles has
told Congress that his job is not
to make friends for the United
States.
"Not for one minute do I think
the purpose of the state depart
ment is to make friends," Dulles
said. "The purpose of the state
department is to look out for the
interests of the United States.
Whether we make friends, I do
not care."
Dulles made the statement
June 18 at a secret session of a
House Appropriations subcom
mittee studying the Eisenhower
administration's request for $3,
864,000.000 to carry on this coun
try's foreign aid programs this
year. Dulles' testimony was
made public Saturday.
Under questioning by Rep.
Brush, Timber Fire
Blackens 900 Acres
Wrightwood, Calif HP) Some
750 fire fighters Saturday con
trolled all but a small portion of
a brush and timber fire which
has blackened about 900 acres,
mostly in the Angeles National
forest, the U. S. forest service
reported.
Six summer cabins were de
stroyed Friday after the fire
sprang up near the YMCA boys'
camp in the Big Pines area.

ministrative officer Bill Dierx
said no other structures had
been destroyed or endangered.
He said there were many sum
mer camps in the Big Pines area
but that none of them had been
in danger.
Firefighters predicted com
plete control of the blaze by 6
a.m. today. A small portion re
mained uncontrolled on the
north side. About 750 acres
were blackened in the forest
area and 150 in Los Angeles
county territory, authorities
said. Los Angeles county con
tributed about 200 of the fire
fighters.
Dierx said the forest service
urged hunters to keep out of the
Big Pines area because of the
large amount of fire equipment
using the raids. He said the Big
Pines highway to Valyermo was
closed because of fire equip
ment. Another Southern California
brush fire was controlled today
after burning over 650 acres five
miles east of Riverside.
Explosion Rocks
Rocket Fuel Plant
Sacramento IP An explosion
that could be heard in a four
mile radius rocked the Aerojet
Corporation's solid rocket fuel
plant at Nimbus Saturday, but
only one employee was hurt.
Plant manager Elmer Nelson
said the blast occurred in T mix
ing station on assembly line
three and was "accidental." He
said the building housing the
station was pretty badly damag
ed by fire touched off by the
blast.
A single fire truck from the
Mills. Calif., department was at
the scene. It had the flames well
under control, although traces of
smoke from a huge black cloud
over the plant site still hung in
the air. .
Nelson identified the injured
man as D. Enzler, who sustained
a back injury.
The dispatcher at the Mills de
partment said he heard the ex
plosion at home, four miles from
the plant. And the Sacramento
county sheriffs office was flood
ed with calls complaining of the
noise.
The plant itself was compara
tively empty, as operations are
slowed down on Saturday. Aero
jet makes rocket engines and
iuels for the government.

Making Enemies
Denton questioned whether
the loans, if unpaid, would not
make enemies instead of friends.
"I do not care in a lot of these
cases whether they are friends or
not," Dulles said. "We are doing
these things because it will serve
the interests of the United
States."
Denton then said he under
stood the state department's
function was to maintain friend
ly relations with foreign coun
tries. "We try to maintain friendly
relations with some foreign coun
tries; not all," Dulles said.
"Do you think that that will
cause hard feelings later when
the soft loans come due and can
not be paid, if that is the case?"
Denton asked. ,
"It may," Dulles replied. "But
I do not care-about that.
"If the making of these loans
saves the country from Commu
nism, people, an area, the loss
of which to Communism would
be bad for the United States, 1
do not care whether they like us
or hate us. We will have accom
plished our purpose."
Denton then asked whether
the government's purpose would
be accomplished if, in the future
when the loans come due, they
cannot be repaid,
. "I do not know," Dulles said.
'That will be a problem for some
other secretary of state, not me."

second annual convention of. the
AFL-CIO state labor council ad
journed here Friday, as dele
gates took action on policy-making
resolutions.
The delegates adopted a reso
lution calling for an investiga
tion of Portland racketeer
James B. Elkins. to determine if
he committed perjury during
recent vice trials in Portland.
A "tax credit" plan was also
offered by political director
George Brown, aimed at widen
ing Oregon's tax base without
the necessity of a state sales
tax. Brown said a sales tax was
not the answer to Oregon's tax
structure. His plan was adopted
for further study by labor.
The delegates, who voted 278
to 21 to keep 23 state officers
and directors in office another
two years, selected Roseburg as
their 1958 convention city.

Family of Six Held Hostage by Robbers Armed With Pistols

traught family of six, three
generations, told officers Sat
urday of a 24-hour concentra
tion 'of terror which gripped
them while they were held hos
tage in their own home by
three robbers armed with six
stolen pistols.
The men, earlier had robbed
a grocery and seriously wound
ed a police officer. The robbery
noon. Officers, checkms the
home Friday evening, saw a
child held at gunpoint. They re
treated and called for assis
tance. In two hours the house
was ringed by 100 officers. The
trio surrendered.

Mrs. Fenstemaker said ner
vously that we can laugh at
some of the things that happen
ed now, but they weren't funny
at the time. The suspense was
terrible."
Decide To Surrender
She said that the three men
decided to surrender in the face
of a tear gas attack. "They toss
ed a large roll of bills to my
daughter and said it was 'for the
trouble we've caused you'."
The robbers will not be for
mally charged until Lillie wins
or loses his fight for life. He
was "improving" at Mercy hos
pital, following surgery for a
gunshot wound in the abdomen.
Flushed from the house they
had "occupied" in their flight
from crime were Walter Joseph
Miller, 28, Los Angeles; WiHiam
Rhodes, 25, Anderson, Ind.; and
Robert Llewelyn Kline, 25, of
Phoenix, Ariz. They said they
met in the Army at Ft. Ord,
Calif., and "came east for a good
time."
They admitted robbing the
Fairhope grocery. Deputies said
Miller blamed Kline for the "ac
cidental" shooting of the Louis
ville officer.
Forty billion dollars will be
spent in West Germany in the
next decade for new highways,
