Milwaukee Braves and the New

open Sunday when the Braves
whipped the St. Louis Cardi
nals, 5-1, for their seventh
straight victory, their 12th in 13
games and the 21st in 26
games since July 15. The Yan
kees, meavhile, downed trS
Baltimore Oriales, 7-2, and .pick
ed up a half-game when the Chi-
cage White Sox split with the
Detroit Tigers.
Those successes enabled both
front-runners to open up Wi
game lea with each having 44
games remaining. A .500 pace
would enable the Braves to
finish with 90 victories and the
Yankees with 94. To overtake
the Braves the Cardinals would
have to play .644 ball, the
Brooklyn Dodgers .674, the Cin
cinnati Kedleg3 .682 and the
Philadelphia Phillies .727. The
. White Sox would have to close
at a .644 pace to wipe out a .500
Yankee closing pace.
Conley Twirls Seven-Hitter
Gene Conley, 6-1 since that
key July 15 date, pitched a
seven-hitter for his eighth win
as the Braves gained the biggest
NL lead of the season and the
longest since they enjoyed the
same margin on July 26, 1956
Almost every statistic
imaginable now supports the
theory that the Braves will go'
on to their first flag since the
shift to Milwaukee. Since July
15, they've played at an .808
clip compared to the Redlegs'
.577. the Dodgers' .567, the Car
dinals' .556 and the collapsing
Philliyes' .407. In addition, they
now hold a season's edge over
each of their rivals 7-5 over
the Cardinals, 9-7 over the Dod
gers, 11-2 over the Redlegs and
10- 8 over the Phillies.
The Yankees, pulling out of
a momentary slump, slammed
out 14 hits behind the six-hit
pitching of Johnny Kucks and
Bob Grim and now show a
steady 7-4 pace for August. The
White Sox, who suffered an 8-5
loss before beating the Tigers,
11- 2, show no signs of mounting
a late drive off their 5-6 pace
for this month.

Braves
in the opener and 3-2 in the
nightcap. San Francisco and
Vancouver split at Vancouver,
the Seals scoring a 4-2 win in
the completion of a game called
for curfew May 12 and dropping
the regularly scheduled game to
the Mounties, 2-1.
In other doubleheaders Holly
wood and Los Angeles split, the
Angels taking the opener at
Wrigley Field 9-4 and the Stars
the nightcap 2-1, and Sacramento
shut out Portland 1-0 and 2-0 at
Portland. '
It was Al Jones' single in the
bottom of an overtime eighth
inning that drove in the Pads'
winning run. Southpaw Bill
Kennedy was tagged with his
second loss. He has won eight for
Seattle and had nearly saved the
Rainiers when he came on in the
seventh with two men on and
had opened a Rainier scoring
drive with a single in the top of
the extra inning. Dick Brodow
ski went the route for the Padres
in the opener for his 11th vic
tory. Long-hitting Chuck Diering,
who has only a .157 average,
made one of his hits count heav
ily in the last of the ninth for
Vancouver. With the game tied
1-1 and two out, Diering rifled a
hit through second base and Joe
Frazier raced in from second,
beating Marty Keough's throw
with a perfect slide into the
plate.
Earlier the Seals had finished
the incomplete game of May 12
by holding their 4-2 edge
through one inning of play.
Los Angeles and Hollywood
played a couple of good neigh
bor contests, . with Hollywood's
Jim Baumer saving the Stars
from double defeat with his
eighth inning triple in the sched
uled seven-inning nightcap. The
split gave the Stars a 2-1 edge
in the series but Los Angeles
still maintains a 13-8 lead in the
cross-town rivalry. In the open
er Steve Bilko led the way for
the Angels with two home runs
and a double, for three RBIs.
At Portland, Sacramento's Joe
Stanka and Bud Watkins scored
themselves a shutout each
against the Bevos, Watkins in
the nine inning opener and
Stanka in the abbreviated night
cap. It was Stanka's eighth win
against nine losses and Watkins'
fifth victory against seven losses.
Each of them allowed four hits,
but the Solons' winning run in
the opener was scored on two
errors by Beaver first baseman
Louis Marquez who bobbled the
ball twice, allowing Len Neal
to go to third and then home.
In the second game, Jim
Greengrass cracked his 13th
homer of the season in the fourth
and Lyle Olsen tripled in the
Wenatchee
Retains Lead

tained their three and one-half
game lead over the rest of the
Northwest league pack by pull
ing out an extra inning win yes
terday to split a doubleheader
with Lewiston.
Scott Griesheimer blasted a
home run out of the park to
give the league leaders an extra-inning
8-7 win in the first
game. But Lewiston bounced
back strong to take the night
cap, 9-2.
In the other twin bills Sun
day, Tri-City and Eugene split,
the Braves winning the opener,
5-2, Eugene the second game,
8-0. and Yakima took both games
with Salem, 5-4 in 10 innings
and 8-7 in the finale.
Yakima moves into Eugene
Tuesday, Tri-City goes to Salem
and Lewiston is at Wenatchee.

and "Irish" Pat McMurtry, Ta
coma, Wash., canceled Saturday
night because of rain, was set
over to next Saturday, Aug. 17,
on a recommendation of the
Portland Boxing commission,
promoter Tommy 'IJoyer said
today.
The action was taken primar
ily to accommodate out of town
fans who traveled to Portland
just for the fight. Chairman Ray
Smith said he thought the fans
would rather return to their
homes, and come a week later,
rather than stay over in Port
land or make two trips in a row.
The fight originally had been
reset for tonight.

cocky Bill Muncey was the
"happiest guy in the world' to
day, the Gold Cup symbolic
of unlimited hydroplane racing,
tucked away for a second
straight year.
Muncey piloted the Miss
Thriftway to victory in the 50th
running Sunday for the most
coveted prize in the daredevil
world of speed boating.
He came here from Detroit
because of his prowess as a
water jockey and brought
Thriftway in second in the fi
nal heat of the Gold Cup con
test but one the basis of points
won earlier, the boat amassed
a total of $1,500 points to cop
the trophy.
Hawaii Kal Out
Maverick, owned by Bill
Waggoner of Phoenix, Ariz.,
and driven by Bill Stead of
Reno, Nev., took fhe lead when
Hawaii Kai conked out in the
sixth lap.
Stead drove Maverick to the
final heat win but his point to
tal for the entire race was only
enough to give his boat third
place. However, Maverick's
berthmate, Shanty I, finished in
third and took second place in
points.

Seattle (IP) Heavyweight
Champion Floyd Patterson ar
rived here today to finish up
training chores for his title fight
Aug. 22 with Pete Rademacher,
Olympic Games heavyweight
title winner.
Patterson looked rested and
fit as his party, stepped from a
Great Northern train which ar
rived at 7:50 a.m.
"I feel fine," said Patterson.
"I've trained just as hard for
this fight as any other. I never
look for a fight to be easy."
Among those on hand to greet
the champion was Jack Hurley,
promoter of the Aug. 22 sched
uled 15-rounder at Sickjs Sta
dium here.
Patterson talked only briefly
with reporters before stepping
into a King county sheriff's car
which led a motor caravan to
Kent, about 15 miles south of
here, where he will finish his
training.

Discussion on a permit system
advocated for deer and elk herd
control will be held at a meeting
of the Oregon Sportsmen club of
Jackson county this evening.
The meeting will be at 8 pjn. at
the Veterans of Foreign Wars
hall, 42 North Front st.
Members of the organization
are opposed to hunter's choice,
or either sex, deer and elk sea
sons, in which nimrods with un
used tags may hunt. They feel
that-a permit system, in which
number of tags is determined by
a survey of deer in the given
area, provides more control of
hunting.

mission final hearing on hunting
regulations held July 26.
