Flower Beds Are Installed

Shady Cove-Trail Brightly
colored flower beds have re
placed the weed-ridden" and clut
tered areas around telephons
poles In the downtown area of
Shady Cove through efforts of
the Shady Cove Garden club.
Members of the group donated
plants, and planted the beds
with the assistance of Rotary
club members. Care for the
mall gardens is provided by
the people on wnose property
they are placed.
Several relatives were here
for the funeral of Mrs. Vella
King, who died July 31 at her
home in Shady Cove following a
long illness.
Arriving here were her daugh
ter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Bob King, Ojai, Calif.; her son
, and daughter-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs Grey -King, Portland; son
and daughter-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Harry King, and son Tom
my, Hayward, Calif.
A sister, Mrs. Lola Joyner,
visiter! during her illness. Mrs.
King was well-known in this
area and at one time was em
ployed by Rogers Rogue River
ranch and by Mrs. Nion Tucker.
Funeral services were held
in Ashland Tuesday for Charles
Boatwright who died Sunday in
a Medford hospital. Survivors
include his wife Mary, and sons
Wayne and Wilbur, hady Cove
as well as a number of other
children, grandchildren and
great grandchildren.
Don McLauchlin of. Morro
Bay. Calif., is visiting his friend.
John Peterson, of Shady Cove.
Peterson returned from his trip
to Mitchell, S.D., where he was
called by the illness of his sister,
Evelyn Peterson.
' Members of the Shady Cove-
Trail Volunteer Fire depart
ment answered a call on Mon
day evening to the home of the
Johnny Minor family of Shady
Cove. Quick action and work on
the part of the fire department
helped to confine most of the
damage to the garage and pump
house. The siding was burned
at the rear of the house but
the garage and pump house were
total losses and the Minor's
were without water until the

saw and a quantity of other
equipment in the garage. With
out a fire department in this
community it is very probable
that both the Minors house and
others adjoining would have
been destroyed in the fire.
Because Mrs. Marion Brad
ford is residing with her son
and daughter-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Harry Bradford, of the
West Fork of Trail creek. Trail,
a number of her other sons and
daughters held a family reunion
at the Bradford home. Coming
a distance were her son and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Noel Brad
ford, and their granddaughter,
Nolene Anderson, of Washing
ton, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Fred
Sloop, of Queen City, Mo., and
a granddaughter and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Benny Jennings
and son, Tommy, of Alton, 111.
Coming from Washington
were another son and family,
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bradford and
son, Ronnie of Pasco, Wash., and
a daughter, Mrs. Ora Holdt of
Wenatchee, Wash. Another
granddaughter and her family,
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Lick and
children, Helen and Jimmy,
came from Lodi, Calif.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rogers
and children, Arlene, Bob and
Lois, of Elk Creek, Trail are
planning to leave Aug. 16 for
Paradise, Calif., to attend the
wedding Aug. 18 of the Roger's
son, Eugene Rogers, to Jean
Yeoman, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs Glendon Yeoman of Para
dise. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Peterson
and children, Helen and Jackie,
have been visitine Peterson's
sister, Mrs. Bessie Carlyon at
her summer home in Edgewood
Park, Shady Cove. Mrs. Carlyon
is employed in the printing de
partment of the Mail Tribune.
Mr. and Mrs. Barry Campbell
had as house guest, Mrs. Camp
bell's sister. Miss Blanche Bar
rett of Portland. She is a stu
dent at nursing school at
Emanuel hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Trusty of
creek. Trail, have as house
guests Dr. and Mrs.'A. O. Hend
ricks, who are in the U.S. on
furlough from the British West
Indes. The Hendricks have been
engaged in missionary work for
the Church of the Nazarene for
the past 21 years. Members of
the Trail Community church at
Wednesday services saw colored
slides on the work the Nazarene
church is doing in the British
West Indies shown by Mrs.
Hendricks. They also plan on
visiting a daughter and family,
Mr and Mrs. Ben Hathaway of
Gold Hill.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bartuss of
Shady Cove were guests of
Comdr. and Mrs. Charles Goebel
of Union Creek at a dinner at
Mary's Casa in Medford cele
brating the birthday of Dick
Bartuss.
Barney Leabo of Shady Cove
has returned from the Veteran's
hospital in Vancouver, Wash.,
after undergoing surgery. He
has been convalescing at home.
Mrs. Dennis Mason of Shady
Cove SDent a few davs in Roeua
Valley hospital last week where
she underwent surgery.
Carolyn Chubb has been
working for the past several
months to get her rock planter
built in the front of the store.
She first collected a pile of
rough looking rocks and then
strategically placed and replaced
them so that they could be seen
from the windows of her neigh
bors at the Treasure Trove.
Subtle hints were also dropped
from time to time concerning
rock work so that finally Carroll
Watson offered to build a plant
er for her, wthich he did Tues
day morning, even adding some
of his own rock to help eke out
the necessary material. Now the
question is: What should be
planted there.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Campbell
of Los Gatos, Calif., are visiting
their son and daughter-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Barry Campbell,
of Elk creek Trail. Campbell
Sr. is employed as a teacher
in government studies at San
Jose state.
Mrs. Jacalyn Langston and
daughter, Lindy, of Sacramento,
are visTting Mrs. Langston's
mother, Mrs. Clara Thurman
They all went to the coast over
the week end visiting ths
beaches of Waldport, Newport
and Agate. Lindy plans to stay
for a while longer with her
grandmother when her mother
returns to Sacramento.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Osborne
of Saskatoon, Saskachawan
Canada, spent four days visit
ing Mrs. Osborne's aunt and
husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest
Segessenman, of Shady Cove
Mrs Segessenman has had word
that her sister, Mrs. E. C. Vos
son, of Eugene is convalescing
following recent surgery.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sackett
and son, Kerry, have returned
from Ashland where Ernie has
been attending summer school
and have rented the Cadde'.l
house. They are moving in now
and Ernie will again teach a
Elk-Trail school this coming
year. They plan to leave on a
trip to Canada to hunt rocks

Ufatch and clock maker. Vinson is the most versatile man in the
VA Domiciliary, as a painter, musician and mathematician as
well. He started checking on the stars when he was in the Navy.

A family reunion was held
at the Clarence Meyer home in
Trail when members of the fam
ily who had not been together
for a period of 20 years had the
opportunity of seeing everyone.
Those attending were Mrs.
Meyer's, sister, and family, Mr.
and Mrs. Ernest Aycock of
Ballinger, Texas, their son and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest
Aycock Jr., and son of San
Angelo, Texas; Mrs. Meyer's
brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs.
R. L. Criswell of Taft, Calif.; the
Meyer's daughter and husband,
Mr. and Mrs. Gwen Birkeimer
of Central Point; Mrs. Meyer's
niece, Mrs. June Helvie of
Napa, Calif., and the Meyer's
family, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence
Meyer and children, Danny,
Kathy, Pat, Joe and Timmy of
Trail. Only the Meyer's oldest
son, Mike Meyer, who is in ths
service" at Twenty-nine Palms,
Calif., was unable to be present
for the event.

bean house guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph Young of Firlough
lodge, Trail.
Mr. and Mrs. Paavo Saari
with their daughter, Mrs.
Mervyn Gleason and baby girl,
Jackie, of Shady Cove, have
just returned from a vacation
trip to Spokane where . they
visited their son and family, Mr.
and Mrs. Lynn Saari, and saw
their son-in-law, S-Sgt. Mervyn
Gleason, before he left for Fair
banks, Alaska, where he will be
stationed. Mrs. Gleason returned
home with her parents and will
stay in Shady Cove for the
present.
Mrs. Mae Lane of Shady Cove
left by plane this week for an
extended trip south where she
will visit relatives in Sacra
mento, Merced, West Los An
geles and Escondido. Then she
will go north by plane again to
Seattle where she will attend
the 60th wedding anniversary
of her brother and wife, Mr. and
Mrs. J. H. Baldridge.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Torrance
are now living at Blythe, Ore.,
where he is working for the
Bridge Logging company. They
spend part of their week ends
at their home in Shady Cove.
Mrs. Torrance returned recently
from a trip to Vancouver, B.C.
The Young Citizen's club of
Shady Cove-Trail will hold -a
teenage dance on Friday, Aug.
9 from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Parish
hall of Our Lady of Fatima
church in Shady Cove. Admis
sion charge will be 50 cents
per couple, 60 cents for stags.
Good music will be furnished
for the evening and refresh
ments will be served.
At the last regular meeting
of the Young Citizens club on
Thursday evening, July 25, at
the Parish hall the plans were
formulated for this dance. The
president,- Garry Britt has
moved to. the coast so Dale
Casey will act as new president.
Rolf Gusland was elected as the
new vice president. The next
regular meeting will be held
on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 7:30
p.m. at the Parish hall.
Jack Hughes, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Sheldon Hughes of Shady
Cove, will graduate from Wood
bury college in Los Angeles on
Aug. 7, receiving a degree in
dress designing and dress fash
ions. Jack expects to be home
in Shady. Cove for a visit with
his family and friends about
Aug. 10.

Association Meeting
Jackson county's pioneer ef
forts to serve emotionally dis
turbed children were discussed
recently at a meeting of the
board of the Jackson Courty
Child Guidance Clinic associa
tion. Dr. John H. Waterman, di
rector of the Mental health sec
tion of the state board of health,
attended the meeting and noted
that Jackson county has led the
way for other communities set
ting up clinics.
. The board reviewed problems
occurring in, Jackson county
which have not been noted in
other communities.
The clinic is presently in a
"transitional phase of develop
ment," a spokesman said, in that
it is seeking replacement of the
psychiatric social worker and ad
ditional space and secretarial
help.

SP Asks To Abandon
9 Miles of Oregon Track
Washington (IP) The South
ern Pacific railroad today asked
the Interstate Commerce Com
mission for permission to aban
don nine miles of track running
from Monroe to Cheshire, Ore.
The railroad said that because of
insufficient traffic the nine-mile
strip was not worth maintaining.

Man Confesses Slaying
Under Portland Bridge
Portland (IP Police said
today that Lonnie Lee Horton,
33, had signed a confession ad
mitting the knife slaying last
week of Charles Henry Sims, 43,
whose bociy was found under the
west end of the Steel bridge
here.
Horton had been in custody as
a material witness. Police said
Horton told them the two had
fought under the bridge after
Sims came at him with a knife.

Portland Women Held
On Abortion Conspiracy
Portland (IP) Three women
were arrested Thursday on
charges of conspiracy to commit
abortion after the Multnomah
county grand jury returned se
cret indictments against them.
They included Ruth Barnett,
former naturopath; Mrs. Doro
thy Shaw, 41, and Mrs. Helen
Buck. All were released on bail.
The indictments grew out- of
arrests made last November.
