Grant County Road
Employees Quit Jobs
John Day, Ore. (IP) Grant
county road employees walked
off the job today and said they
would "hold union meetings"
until members of the Grant
county court agreed to arbitrate
their demands for a 44-hour
week with the same take-home
pay they now get for 55 hours
Leo Butts, business repre
sentative for the Oregon Public
Employees Council, said the
men made their request last
spring, and received an answer
from the county court only
Thursday. He said the court's
answer was to cut off five over
time hours, meaning the loss to
each man of 7V4 hours a week.
He said this would amount to
a reduction in pay for construc
tion equipment operators of
about $750 a year.
The minimum wage here is
$1 43 an hour for road construc
tion. The average pay for equip
ment operators is $1.72 an hour.
