Little Strokes That Occur
During Sleep or During The Day
One of the common ways of
growing old is through the action
of a series of little strokes, some
of which come
unnoticed dur
ing sleep. Dur
ing the early
morning
hours, when
the blood pres
sure falls to its
lowest level,
the blood will
sometimes clot

tery in the brain, especially if
the lining of the artery has be
come roughened " and thickened
by disease. Then the smell bit of
brain, perhaps no bigger than
the head of a pin, that was sup
plied by the little artery, dies
and turns into a scar.
Sometimes these "little
strokes" come during the day,
and the person has a brief dizzy
or woozy spell, perhaps with
nausea and even vomiting. Oc
casionally after a little stroke
in the night, the victim will
wake with a "head on him" as if
he had been drinking hard the
night before. I remember a col
lege president, a man who had
always had a wonderful memory,
who woke one morning with
what he felt sure was "half of
his memory gone." Another man
woke feeling queer and, for the
next three weeks, wondered why
he kept biting his tongue. Ob
viously, the center for a nerve
-that controls the tongue had
been injured. Another man, with
a similar brain injury, for two
months, had trouble swallowing
i!ood will keep going down
the wrong way; causing him to
cough distressingly at table. A
few men woke with their sense
of smell gone, and a few with
a feeling of tremendous sensi
tiveness all down one side of
the body from their face to their
foot. Many workers with numb
ness or clumsiness in one hand.
I remember two who woke with
great pain, in a wrist. Many of
the people who had their dizzy
spell during the day wondered,
at the time, if they were having
a stroke. Fortunately, in most
cases, the effects wore off within
days or weeks or months.
A Changed Man
I have spent much of my life
studying these little strokes.
Sometimes a man will fall out
of his chair, and in a moment
pick himself up. He may think
at the time that nothing much
happened, but soon the family
notices that he is a changed
man perhaps irritable, unreas
onable, slowed-up, and unable
to work well at the office. Oc
casionaly I willl see a person
who for 20 minutes cannot talk;
he can't find the right words.
Perhaps an arm or leg will be
weak for a few hours. Some
times a pain will shoot into the
chest or the abdomen.
I am always sure of a little
stroke when the man's writing
changes so much that the bank
sends for him to give them a
new signature for his ' checks.
Often he becomes a sore trial
at home where he is unreason
able and "ornery."
His wife will tell me that in a
minute she lost her old husband,
and got in his place a stranger
who is now a sore trial to her.
Sometimes the man will sudden
ly lose 50 pounds in weight. If
he has long had an increase in
blood, pressure, when a little
stroke comes the pressure is like
ly to drop to normal and per
haps to stay there.
One of the commonest ways of
dying is to go slowly, step by
step, with one tiny stroke after
another. The man who used to
stand so straight and used to
stride along with such strong
steps now is slowed-up both
mentally and physicially; his
face may look dull; he may walk
with small tottery steps; he may
shove his feet along; he may get
a shaking palsy in his hands, he
may get careless about bathing
or changing his linen, and he
may go out on the street with
soup down his coat.
The sad thing is that, as yet,
we doctors don't know of any
way of keeping the little strokes
from coming, and sometimes we
cannot do much to help these
people to get rid of their symp
toms. The best thing, probably,
is for a person not to get stout;
not to eat too much; and par
ticularly not to eat too much
fat. Sometimes the giving of
iodides seems to help in clearing
away the symptoms.
Do Men Have A Change of Life?
Many physicians assume that
men have a sort of change of
life, much like that of women,
but I have never been able to
accept the idea. I do not feel
there is enougK proof for it, and
there is muoh proof against it.

felt a bit depressed and dissatis
fied with life when he was in
his forties, and was sent to me
with the diagnosis of a male
menopause. I could not find any
thing wrong with the man phys
ically; he could still play a
match-type of tennis ,and his
glands of internal secretion
seemed all to be functioning
well. I thought his tendency to
moodiness could easily be ex
plained, partly on the basis of
his family tendency to depres
sions, and partly on certain dis
satisfactions he had had in life.
His colorless and prudish wife
had never made him- happy, and
this seemed to explain his flare
up of interest in sex.
Later, wher.; after the death
of his wife, he married a charm
ing and well-sexed woman, he
was happy and remained so as
lung as I knew him. Much
against the idea of a male meno
pause was the fact that 25 years
later, when I happened to run
into him, he told me that sexual
ly he was almost as active as
when he wjs fifty.
