Old Diesel Train
Retired in Boston
Boston OPi Old 6000. one of
the earliest diesel-p ropelled
streamlined railroad passenger
trains, has been retired after
2,735.000 miles of service.
For 22 years the silver train
sped over the rails of the Boston
& Maine Railroad under such
names as '"The Flying Yankee,"
"The Mountaineer," "The Che
shire" and '"The Minute Man."
Pio. 6000 was delivered to the
B. & M. in 1935, the year when
the nation's railroads began the
trend toward streamline trains.
The diesel train replaced a crack
steam-propelled "Flying Yan
kee" express which linked Bos
ton with cities in Maine.
Later, the dicsel was used in
runs, between Boston and the
White Mountains and during the
winter from Boston to Troy,
N.Y.
