Wall Street Loses
Some Optimism Held

releasing information on the
amount of wage and other costs
being absorbed.
The steel industry raised
wages 8 per cent July 1 and ad

Oil companies pushed prices

and big inventories forced them
to retract the raise. In fact the

The Family Council
Editor's not: Th Family Council consists of a Judge, a psychiatrist,
threa clsrcymen, a newspaper editor a women's 0!itor and two writers. Each
article la a summary of an actual report. The Family Council does not five
advice; It merely reports on problems that have been dealt with by
responsible agencies and counselors.
Flora D. I won't take in our

Ganavive M. He's our cross

Flora D. My sister and I are
both married and living in cities
quite fa -?part. Our father is
dead and our mother, quite aged,
lives with me.
"Our problem is our younger
brother, who is an alcoholic. He
has made a mess of his life, de
serted his wife and children and
just drifts from place to place.
Every now and then he turns up
at my house or my sister's. We
cannot have him around the
house with the children there.
Also, we have some standing in
the community and it is very
embarassing to have him around.
We have given him so much
money, it is disgraceful. I feel

suDsequent reductions were
double the original rise.
So it goes along the line, vith
competition restraining price
rises sufficient to compensate
for higher costs.
And now comes the Guaranty
Trust Company's monthly letter
to say there is no buoyancy in
business -operations. The bank
says the widespread expectation
of an upturn in business this
autumn is in some measure the
product of hope rather than of
tangible signs of rising activity.
Commenting on this same sub
ject, Interational Statistical Bu
reau notes there is nothing dyna
mic on the upside, and no great
fear of a general decline.
"This lack of excitement,"
says the bureau, "makes it
tempting ,to take a mental va
cation." It goe on to say that mental
vacations in such periods as the
present usually are a costly
mistake.
"If current operations demand
less energy, there is more en
ergy available to put into for
ward planning. There is plenty
to do even though the economy
is temporarily standing still."
As for money rates. Guaranty
Trust Co. holds a rise in the
prime lending rate, now the
same as the rate on some gov
ernment bonds, is merely a mat
ter of timing and a change can
be expected after the Treasury's
financing is completed.
that my sister is making matters
worse by always taking him in.
I refuse to do it anymore.
Genevieve M. I know it does'
not help and perhaps makes mat
ters worse, but how can you
turn away your own brother
when he comes to your door?
Flora is cruel. I don't like having
Harry around the house either,
but at least I can give him a few
good meals to eat, a clean bed to
sleep in for a little while. He is
usually very quiet and after a
week or two, just slips away
again without saying a word to
anyone.
As I see it, Harry is our cross
to bear in life and we have no
right to disown him.
I do feel that Flora ought to,
at least, shoulder some of the
burden with me. If she took him
in, for a couple of weeks each
year, it would mean that he gets
a little more care.
Tha Council Alcoholics often
try the patience of those closest
to them beyond tfie breaking
point. Nevertheless, Flora's point
of view cannot possibly be justi
fied. If she has any conscience at
all, she will not be able to turn
her brother from her ojpor.
Genevieve's attitude, while hu
man and ethical, could still be
improved. Harry is more than a
burden, "a cross to bear." He is
a human being. Even in his,
wrecked state, there are gleams
of something worth while in him.
He should not be treated like a
mass of hopeless debris.
. The history Of Harry's alco
holism is evidently so old that
the sisters evidently give no
thought to rehabilitation. But
they should never give up all
hope and all effort. There are
countless stories of sudden
changes in apparently hopeless
cases.
Harry needs more than a bed
and a few meals.- Without letting
him get under their skins or be
come too dependent upon them,
the sisters ought to try offering
him a listening ear when he
comes to see them. If he opens
up on his problems, they should
try to gently steer him in the di
rection of Alcoholics Anony
mouse, or of a clergyman.
Under no circumstances should
the sisters use. nagging or pres
sure on Harry. They should try
to greet him as if they are happy
to have him. If they will look
into him a little more deeply,
they will find things that give
them reason to love him and to
hope for him.
