fected her nose. The lady told
me she had been skin tested
and patch tested and dieted and
treated with salves and lotions
until she was fed-up. I said that
since the trouble was on only
one hand it must be due to
putting that hand and only that
hand into some irritant. After
much questioning had failed to
throw light on the problem, I
asked the lady to g home and
watch carefully to see what irri
tant she put her left hand into
that she did not put her right
hand into.
In a few weeks, she returned
to show me that the eczema was
sone. She had her window-boxes
full of primroses, and every
morning, with the w&lering-can
in her right hand she had pick
ed off dead leaves. Occasionally,
when a plant had had a flower
and she had smelled it, her nose
had become inflamed!
Inability To Talk
After a Stroke
Thousands of persons who get
a stroke are unable for a while
to talk. Some can hardly say a
word, and usually they are yyeat
ly distressed because they know
what they want to say. One can
see them struggling hard, try
ing to find the words they want,
or trying to express them. Usual
ly they have similar difficulties
in writing and reading. There
are several types of this disease
which we doctors call aphasia,
or an inability to speak.
Can anything be done? For
tunately, In most cases, some
ability to speak returns, and
I've seen many cases in which
after a month or two the per
son was conversing either well
or fairly comfortably. Probably
immediately after a stroke there
is a certain amount of shock to
the tissues surrounding the dam
aged place, and when this shock
clears away, much function re
turns. Also, there is likely to be some
watery swelling or "edema" of
the tissues of the brain, and
when this swelling goes, func
tion returns. Also, it is probable
that later the brain learns to re
route messages around the in
jured place. Some persons who,
after a stroke, nave to learn to
speak all over again can be help
ed by a teScher of speech. There
are bks written on the train
ing of persons who have lost
their power to talk.
I know an able physician who,
mav vears aeo. when he was a
young man sitting in his office,
suddenly found himself unable
to talk. After several weeks of
despair, his wife started in,
teaching him a new word each
day. He'd practice and practice
with her until he knew tne wora.
In this way he slowly and pain
fullv loarned to talk aeain. much
as a child does. Today, one would
hardly notice anything wrong
with his speech, and he's a suc
cessful medical director of a
large business.
A Woman Who Reacts
Wrongly to Doctors
When a tense, nervous, over
sensitive, bright and socially at
tractive wornn tells me that
drugs work wrongly for her, I
prick up my ears because this
tells me most of what I need to
know about her. Usually, she
says that instead of quieting her
or helping her to sleep, a barbi
turate drug mjjkes her more
wide-awake than"sKe was before,
and a "shot" of. morphine will
make her want" to climb the
walls like a crazed cat.
One big reason why it is un
wise for a nervous woman (or
man) to keep overworking or
dissipating until she "goes over
the edge" into a nervous break
down is that when the break
down comes, no sedative drug is
likely to do any good. It is like
ly to make the person even more
depressed. I learned this lesson
in the great influenza epidemic
of 1918, wflen my brief attack
of "flu" threw me into a sort
of nervous breakdown. Because
of a severe insomnia, I tried to
take sleeping pills but, for a
while, they worked in reverse,
and caused by brain to feel tre
mendously active and "lit-up."
Gradually, with rest, this stage
passed, arid then at last sleeping
pills, give me blessed oblivion
for a few hours.
