Explosion Causes
Large Trash Fire
An explosion of unknown
source caused a large trash fire
on the fairgrounds property near
the new Armory last nighty fire
men said today.
Firemen said they were called
to the fire about 9:30 p.m. Sev
eral persons reported to the de
partment that they heard an
explosion. The trash fire in tree
limbs and scrap lumber started
afterward, they said.
The fire was near the en
trance to the fairgrounds.
Earlier in the day, firemen
were occupied with three graes
fires and three trash fire's.
They extinguished -grass fires
in the 3900 block of south Pa
cific highway, in the 900 block
of north Central ave. along the
Southern Pacific tracks, and in
the 1700 block of Roberts rd.

London Disarmament
Talks Not to Effect

disarmament conference, U.S.;
military forces are going to be,
cut back. -- 1
The reason: The deciling buy
ing power of the dollar has
forced up defense costs.
While disarmament negoti
ators are haggling in London for
some, token '"first step" reduc
tion in arms and men. Defense
Secretary Charles E. Wilson has
clamped a S38 billion spending
limit on the military services.
This would be at a level some
S2.200,000,000 less than the cur
rent annual spending rate of
$40,200,000,000 on America's de
senses. And more cuts are coming,
Wilson said, because of "creep
ing cost increases" resulting
from inflation. He added that
the grass roots sentiment of the
country as reflected by Congress
favors reducing defense outlays.
The Effects. '
Asked at his press conference
Thursday about the effect of the
slash in America's military
might, Wilson replied it ' still
would produce a "reasonable
minimum" of security.
But he quickly added that the
Pentagon would ultimately have
to answer for, the big question
of "what -is enough."
He said the situation is helped
by the fact that "the tempera
ture of the world is down a lit
tle," although he was not "down
grading the threat" to world
peace.
The government is in a "cost
bind," the defense chief said,
and has to "back down" on
some of its military spending
gcals so as not to exceed the
federal debt limit."
Presidential Approval
Wilson, who said his economy
program has the approval of
President Eisenhower, said more
manpower cuts are coming on
top of the. 100,000 men he had
ordered dropped from the onili
tary rolls by the end of the
year. But he refused to say how
many, although he hinted that
future draft calls may drop as
low as 7,000 men a month. This
compared with the September
quota of 8,000 men the lowest
