Home Town Senators in Three-Hitter
By UNiTED RESS
President Eisenhower picked a fine night to watch a ball game
and he wound up joining in the praise of the "hottest" pitcher in
the majors at the moment Dick Donovan of the Chicago While
Sox.
The President, making his first mid-season appearance at a
baseball game Tuesday night since last Aug. 31. commented ap
preciatively to aides on Donovan's brilliant three-hit pitching as
the White Sox righthander beat the Senators. 7-1. Donovan, who
didn't walk a batter in breezing to his 11th victory, has given up
total of eight hits in his last three games.
Not only did the President
witness some fine pitching, but
also some long ball clouting as
Larry Doby and Minnie Minoso
each walloped a pair of homers
to keep the White Sox within
three games of first place. Roy
Sievers, who collected two of
Washington's hits, also hom
ered.
In, other American league
games, the Yankees helped Ca
say Stengel celebrate his birth
day with a 10-4 victory over the
Athletics: Boston blanked De
troit. 4-0. and Cleveland licked
Baltimore, 6-0.
. Brave Retain Lead
The Milwaukee Braves clung
to their half same lead in the
National league race with a 5-:
decision over the Pirates: the
Cardinals topped the Giants.
7-3; Philadelphia defeated Cin
cinnati, 8-5. and the Cubs split
. a doubleheader with the Dodg
ers, Brooklyn winning the open
er, 1-0, an Chicago the nightcap.
4-3.
' Yogi Bcrra drove in four runs
with four hits, including a home
run, to pace a 16-hit attack that
gave the Yankees their 14th vic
tory in 15 meetings with Kansas
City this season. Southpaw
Whitey Ford wasn't nearly at his
best, giving up 13 hits, includ
ing a homer by Billy Martin, but
he hung in there for the distance
' to post his sixth triumph.
Yogi Berra's third inning hom
er against the Kansas City Ath
letics Tuesday was the New
York Yankees' 100th of the sea-
son. end it marked the 34th year
they have totaled at least 100
homers.

Al Smith, Gene Woodling and
Vic Wertz, then rallied for their
last five runs in the ninth.
The Braves scored their first
three runs with the aid of two
Pirate errors and a passed ball,
and Lew Burdette then coasted
to his ninth victory with a five

and Pittsburgh couldn't score
again until the eighth. Johnny

Hillman was credited with the
victory but he needed help from
Dick Drott and Don Elston.

wood squad took on Portland,
defeating the Beavers in both
ends of a doubleheader 5-0
in the seven inning opener, and
6-5 in the nightcap.
In the first, George Witt got
his 15th win this season against
four losses while allowing the
Beavers only three hits. Darrell
Martin, the Portland starter
who gave away four runs in the
third frame, got the loss. He is
now 0-4. Leo Rodriguez hit a
welcome but unnecessary homer
for Hollywood in the sixth
frame.
Portland started fast in the
second, collecting four runs in
the first three innings. But the
Stars went home run wild with
round-trippers by Jim Baumer,
Bill Causion and Joe Duhem to
forge into the lead.
Other Games
In other games, San Francisco
lost its first extra inning game
of the season to Vancouver, 3-2,
while Los Angeles smashed Sac
ramento, 8-3, and San Diego
slipped by Seattle, 7-6.
The Seals suffered their loss
as a result ot a 10th inning
homer by Kal Segrist that spell
ed the tie breaking tally.
San Francisco got one eacn
in the first two frames and
tried to coast on that. Then the
Mounties came through with the
tying runs in the eighth.
Jack Spring, 6-5, went the
distance, and lost. Reliefer
Sandy Consuegra, 3-0, was cred
ited with the win.
The story was similar in Sac
ramento. The Solons tied it up
three-all in the bottom of the
sixth and then the unpredictable
Angels let go with five runs in
the eighth.
Grand Slam Homer
Four of those came off the
bat of Bob Jenkins who hit
the ball somewhere out in space
with the bases loaded. Vito Val
entinetti got his fifth win
against three losses. Loser Mar
shall Bridges is now 7-10.
The San Diego Padres showed
that they also are not adverse
to coming from behind if it
means winning. The Rainiers
had a 6-5 edge going into the
ninth frame when reliefer-loser
Gene Hayden (3-5), permitted
two singles and a walk and
the tying run. Then Larry Jan
sen stepped to the mound giving
up one hit, a single to Phil
Moran that brought in the game
winner. Vic Lombardi collected
his fourth win against one loss
in relief.
