People ask kw skin grafting
is done. Almost always the -skin
that is graftefl is taken from
the person af
fected. If it is
taken from
someone else,
it will not
stick very
long. Today,
sometimes, in
cases of bad
burns, skin
will be grafted
or Aivarer from a donor
because, even if it sticks for only
three or four weeks, it may tide
the patient over and save his
life.
There are different kinds of
skin grafting. Sometimes a
"whole thickness" 'of skin is
used. Skin can be taken from, let
us say, the upper part of the
chest and moved up onto the
face or top of the head with a
sort of inch-worm technic. An
expert in cosmetie surgery can
move skin around in wonderful
ways and, out of it, can make
a new nose or a new ear. A good
plastic surgeon who. does much
of his work on tae face is often
a good artist and a good sculptor.
His training in sculpture helas
him greatly when he has to re
model a nose. Usually, he doesn't
just take off a hump from a
nose, but he goes on to make the
bridge narrower, and often he
has to, remodel the tip. of the
nose.
In some forms cf skin grafting.
only a very thin layer is taken
off, and in another form, little
bits of skin are seeded over a
bare area.
Can Bladder Stones Be
Many good people write, tell
ing me that they have heard of
some substance which, when
taken by mouth, will dissolve
gallstones or kidnev stones. I
never heard of suclr a drug and
wouldn't expect there would
be one. I have often heard of
people taking olive oil to pa
gallstones, but what they pass
are little lumps of Castile soap
fmaele from the conUDlnatioH of
the dive oil, and the alkaline
seoretion of tee bowel.) I remem
ber a woman who,, after taking
olive oil, came to prove te me
ttiat her gallstones had iaeen
passed, but when I x-rayed her,
tlejre they still were!
Little Fatty Tumors (Lipomas)
Many people ask about little
soft disc-like nodules that caa
be moved about slijilitly under
the skin. These consist of fat, and
unless one of them grows to a
large size (as very rarely hap
pens), nothing need be donp, and
nothing should be done. Thesf
nodules do not turn into canesr
or anything else. No one kns
why they come is certain r-sons.
Dr. Alvarez heess his reados
will understand traat it would ke
impossible for hiaa to answer re
quests for information &r to at
tempt to diagnoses by mtiil.
