not take a good history, can
make one bad mistake in diag
nosis after another.
Why does he make the mis
takes? Because there is no labo
ratory tcjt that I know of that
will show that a sad-looking
woman in the office is dying of
a broken heart. There is no labo
ratory test that can be counted
on to show that she is mildly
psychotic? or going insane. There
is no test to show that she is
a nervous breakdown because of

Boise 'IPV A fire which
swept across more thgn 7,000
acres of rangeland about seven
miles southeast of Jiere Sunday
was reported out Monday, but
not before the flames-injured a
Twin Falls woman and destroy
ed some private property in the
area.
Mrs. Verna Henson, Twin
Falls, was listed in fair condi
tion at St. Lukes hospital wit.i
burns on her arms and legs. She
suffered the burns when she and
her husbind, Alexander, were
trapped by the range fire as
they drove along Highway 30
east of here.
The Hensons stopped their
car when smoke became so
thick they could not see the
highway and got out of the car
to seek safety. Mrs. Henson ap
parently went toward the fire
instead of away from it and fell
down in the flames.
The range fire also destroyed
some equipment which BLM of
ficials said appeared to be part
of a mining dredge and some
piles of lumber.

known grocery firm, the Eavy
Co. Eavy, who had been asso
ciated with the firm for 68 years,
died Sunday night following a
lengthy illness.

So commonly a keen diagnos
tician can tell at a glance that
the patient who has just walked
into his consulting room has had
a little stroke or a big one, or
has Parkinson's disease, or rheu
matoid arthritis, or is mentally
disturbed, or has asthma, or an
exophtalmic goiter, or. some
form of heart disease, or has
suffered some serious injury to
his brain, or is depressed, or
slightly manic, or schizoid (mild
ly schizophrenic) or is in an at
tack of migraine, or has an in
active thyroid gland, or is suffer
iasj; from hysteria.
The diagnosis csf these diseases
that are so common is today be
ing frequently missed because
even able men are depending
too much on the reports that
come from the laboratory and
the x-ray department. Many pa
tients have told me of having
had only ten minutes with an
eminent consultant, and those
ten minutes the man spent in
goin? over the laboratory re
ports. Naturally, the doctor
never learned that the woman
was ill because she was at her
wit's end with a delinquent son
or an alcoholic husband, or she
was depressed and planning to
commit suicide within a few
days. Such facts can be learned
only by, first, making friends
with the patient and getting her
confidence, and then chatting
quietly for a half hour or more
Oftentimes I get the essential
story only after several such
chats.
