Bonus Baby McDaniels Helps
Carts Take Two From Pirates
Vcj SKCa e sc
ion's ( !ffeiar pitcking
performance has amazing
achievement today while the
St. Louis Cardinals added an
edge in the vital "lost column"
to their reasons for believing
they'll come out on top in the
National League's fantastic five
team race.
The 18-year-old Von, who
signed a $50,000 bonus contract
only six months ago, pitched a
one-hitter Sunday as the Cardi
nals whipped the Pittsburgh Pi
rates, 4-0 and 9-8. Gene Baker's
second-inning double was the
blow that deprived McDaniel of
the first perfect game in modern
National League history as he
fanned four and did not permit
another runner to reach base.
The sweep enabled the Cardi
nals to move within three per
centage points of the first-place
Milwaukee Braves who split
with the New York Giants, and
left them with a 55-40 won-lost
record.
Johnny Antonelli pitched a
seven-hitter to beat the Braves
for the fourth time, 2-0, but Mil
waukee gained a split when
Gene Conley whipped the Giants
for the third time in 10 days,
5-3. Wjllie Mays smashed four
straight singles in the opener for
the Giants while Ed Mathews'
two-run, fourth - inning single
was the big blow for the Braves
in the second game.
The Dodgers cut Milwaukee's
margin over them to a game-and-a-half
when Johnny Podres
scattered nine hits and Carl Fu
rillo hit the eighth grand stam
mer of his major league career
in a 7-2 victory over the Bed
legs. It was the third time this
season Podres beak the Bedlegs
and raised his career record
against them to 9-3. Ted Klu
szewski homered for Cincinnati.
Curt Simmons won his 10th
game and rookie Jack Sanford
his 14th as the Phillies whipped
the Chicago Cubs, 3-2 and 7-1.
Granny Hamner's sacrifice fly in
the ninth sent over the winning
run in the opener and he whack
ed a two-run douBle before Ed
Bouchee exploded a three-run
homer when the Phillies kayoed
Dick Drott with five runs in the
seventh inning of the nightcap.
Whit Sox Advance
The Chicago White Sox defeat
ed the Baltimore Orioles, 4-3,
and advagced within 3Vi games
of first place in the American
League when the New York
Yankees split a double-header
with the Detroit Tigers. The
Tigers won the opener, 6-5, but
the Yankees took the nightcap,
4-3. in 13 innings. The Boston
Red Sox outslugged the Cleve
land Indians, 9-8, and the Kan
sas City Athletics won their first
double-header of the year, 6-2,
and 3-2, in 11 inninRS over the
Washington Senators in the
other AL games.

In Diamond League
Tha Medford Chancy Studs
hay re-billed a gam with the
Talent-Aihland club in the
Rogue Valley league. The
gam will be played at the
fairgrounds park Wednesday
night. In the last encounter
between lha two teams. Med
ford slipped by 9 to 8.
Cave Junction ambitions of
upset over the Medford Cheney
Studs in the Rogue Valley Base
ball league looked well on the
way toward realization after
four innings of play at the fair
grounds yesterday afternoon.
But the roof split wide in the
fifth frame and came completely
crashing down in the sixth.
The Outlaws boomed to a 2
to 0 advantage in the second in
ning. That held good until Med
ford's Frank Rector and Jerry
Bartow smashed back to back
homeruns in the fifth. An in the
sixth panel the hard-pounding
Studs swung their bats for 12
hits and 11 runs.
By the two inning offensive
the Medfords gained a 13 to 3
triumph.
It was ninth victory for Che
ney, which is undefeated in
the league. The Studs assured
themselves of at least a tie in
the final regular season stand
ings. Cave Junction, suffering
its third RVL setback against
six victories, remained in second
place.
Pitcher Jim Eggers held the
Studs to just one hit over the
opening four innings yesterday.
In this stretch he ran into only
one tough spot, in the third in
ning when he walked the first
two men up. The next three
Medford batters were retired.

ed his pitching with a second
inning double play.
Medford twirler Bartow, pull
ed even with mound mate
Duane Sides with his fourth
'oop decision but he didn't have
one of his better days. Field
support helped him through the
first inning but he was in
trouble from the second canto
through the fifth, yielding sev
en of his nine hits through that
time. Some nice stops and
catches by the defense assisted
in stemming the Outlaw scor
ing punch but one miscue did
some damage during that time.
Cave Junction ran up its two
runs in the second inning on
bases on balls to Ron Maurer
and Les Saffer, an error on a
potential double play ball and
Chuck Marchant's single. Other
Outlaw marker was in the sev
enth chukker on a walk to Ron
Maurer, a hit by Les Saffer
and an error.
In Medford's fifth to tie up the
hassle Rector slapped the ball
over the left field wall and
Bartow over the right. John
Kovenz, Ron Owings, Frank
Roelandt and Frank Rector each
got two-hits in the sixth when
Medford had 15 batting turns.
Ed Reinking and Jack Cooney
two baggered in the inning. Lar
ry Perkins and Bartow also had
hits. There was a fielder's op
tion, a walk and an error.
Eggers was relieved by Wayne
Saffer after yielding eight hits
in the sixth. The Studs socked
Saffer for four more. Seven of
runs were charged to Eggers.
A stabbing stop by Second
Baseman Perkins choked off a
possible CJ run in the third
inning. Long runs and hard
catches were made by First
Baseman Jack Cooney in the
fourth inning and Outfielder
Jerry Droscher in the fifth to
snip Outlay threats.

Sunday Games Split,
Seals Retain Lead
By UNITED PRESS
The road race for the Pacific
Coast league pennant was just
the same today after- a wheel
splitting Sunday of split double-,
headers, but the front-running
San Francisco Seals were that
much harder to catch.
The Seals did nothing to their
six and a half game lead by split
ting with Vancouver, but the
lead was two games older and
they looked more like the club
that had to be caught.
Vancouver knocked the Seals
sideways 3-2 in the opener and
then relaxed meekly by a 7-4
count.
Portland won out 5-4 in the
first and lost out to Hollywood
5-2 in the second one. It was
Seattle 7-4 over San Diego in
the first game, but San Diego
8-3 in the nightcap.
In a night doubleheader the
Sacramento Solons and the Los
Angeles Angels swapped 4-0
shutouts.
Made Noises
Vancouver made noises in the
first game like they wanted to
take over the contender's role,
by scoring three early runs for
Erv Palica.
The three were enough but
four wouldn't do it in the second
game as the Seals clobbered
five pitchers for seven markers.
Frank Kellert for San Francisco
and Kal Segrist for the Mounties
homered. ;
Seal Manager Joe . Gordon
went two for two by getting
tossed from both games.
Portland withstood a late Hol
lywood rally to win the opener
for graduate Bob Anderson. But
in the second one the Stars took
advantage of home runs by Bill
Causion and Jim Baumer to take
the Beavers and keep them in
last place.
Dyck Homers
Jim Dyck got four hits includ
ing a ninth inning home run
that broke a 4-4 tie to lead Seat
tle to victory. There were two
aboard when Dyck cracked his
game-winning hit.
In the second one the Padres
coasted behind the four-hit pitch
ing of Jim Grant.
Preston Ward homered for the
winners and two of the hits off
Grant accounted for all the Seat
tle runs. They were home runs
by Bill Glynn and Hal Bevan.
Joe Stanka had it easy in sub
duing Los Angeles on three hits
after Jim Greengrass homered
for the second Sacramento run.

eight hits himself.
