ley, of the Hearing and Speech
Center of the New York Uni
versity Bellevue Medical Cen
ter, in New York, deafness
should be discovered as early
as possible in infants, and quick
ly treated.
The child should immediately
be fitted with
a hearing-aid
and ear
phones so that
he can utilize
and get the
b e n ef i t of
what little
hearing h e
has. Half of
the children
with marked deafness are suffer
ing from some other defect.
Fortunately, total deafness is
rare. Three instances of it have
been seen in 700 cases. Some
99 per cent of the children suf
fer from a congenital abnor
mality of the nerves that run to
the ears.
One of the simplest tests of
hearing that can be applied
shortly after birth is the so
called "startle" or "blink re
sponse" of the infant to a sudden
noise. Dr. Don M. Markle said
he tested his infant's hearing
by crumbling a paper near him.
At the recent meeting of the
American Medical Association
in New York I had a pleasant
End stimulating visit with Mrs.
Spencer Tracy, who was show
ing doctors something about the
wonderful work that is being
done in Los AngeleF by the John
Tracy Clinic for deaf children.
Without charge the school sends
out instructions to mothers all
over the world, telling them how
to teach their deaf children. The

The Danger To Infants From
Base Plugs
At a recent meeting of the
plastic surgeons, Dr. V. D. Hy
slop told of the terrible burns
of the mouth which result when
a creeping child finds i bit of
wire and, with one peice in his
mouth, sticks the other into an
electric outlet in the baseboard.
Horrible disfigurement can fol
low if a good plastic surgeon is
not quickly called to repair the
defect in the cheek.
I can remember when one of
metal paper knife, stuck the end
of it into a base plug. There was
a flash of light, which forunate-
ly, was so transient that the
child's fingers were not serious
ly burned. Parents with creep
ing children ought to get special
plugs which can be inserted in
those outlets that are not being
used. Such foresight can avert
a tragedy.
Shorter X-Ray Exposures
Today those many people who
are worrying about supposed
dangers of x-ray examinations,
can be encouraged by the news
that a new high x-ray film has
been developed, so fast that it
requires only one-twelfth of the
exposure that dental x-ray firms
formerly needed.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.

chance of "being handsome."
The boy, who will be named
for his father. Dr. Mirko Skofic,

Mundi hospital. Attendants said
both mother and baby were do
ing fine.
Skofic said the boy was dark
haired with blue eyes and "a
nose that looks like his moth
er's." He said Gina "smiled happily
with tears in her eyes," when
she saw the baby. 1

bank made public Saturday a
report recommending a 10-year
$118,000,000 economic develop
ment program for the Arab
kingdom of Jordan.
The report was written by a
bank mission which surveyed
the Jordanian economy at the
request of the Amman govern
ment in the spring of 1955.
The mission's findings were
sent in draft form to Amman in
April. 1956. and were transmit
ted formally last January, the
bank said. They were not made
public until now because of the
recent political crisis in which
anti-western elements plotted to
get rid of King Hussein.
