Club Announces
New Members
Mrs. Alexander Collins and
Mrs. William Hust were wel
comed as new members of So
journers' club at a meeting July
25 at the Pythian hall.
The president, Mrs. Floyd
Robertson, announced a So
journer garden party and guest
day to be held August 8 in the
garden of Mrs. O. A. Eden, 211
Genessee street, Medford. Mrs.
James Winslow, chairman of the
event, requests that reservations
be phoned in to her at SP 3-4391.
The new year book will be
distributed at the party. Re
freshments were served by Mrs.
Gene Chamberlain, Mrs. Frank
Cook and Mrs. W. J. Marquess
at Thursdays meeting.
Winners at bridge were Mrs.
Roy Stein and Mrs. J. Davidson;
at pinochle, Mrs. D. Stewart and
Mrs. Floyd Robertson; and at
canasta, Mrs. B. H. Lyon and
Mrs. George Henney. Another
prize was won by Mrs. Harry
Potter.

ing with the United States Navy.
He is stationed at China Lake,

Melvin Starks, Kerby, who are
newlyweds, were honored at a
potluck dinner and social eve
ning held Saturday night by
Illinois Valley Eagles and aux
iliary members. Mrs. Starke is
the former Opal Wadleigh.
Gifts were presented to
couple following dinner,
dancing followed later in
evening.
Nurses to Meet
Dr. Thomas C. Bolton, ortho
pedic surgeon, will speak on
"Care of Patients" at a meeting
of licensed practical nurses Mon
day, July 29. The meeting will
be at 7:30 p.m. in Rogue Valley
hospital.

Cave Junction Two brides-to-be
were honored recently at
showers giverrin Cave Junction.
They are Miss Lylabelle Cross,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mar
vin Cross, and Miss Clydus
Knight, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Clyde Knight, all of Illinois
Valley.
Miss Cross, who will wed

Wash, at the Oak Harbor Chris
tian Reformed church August 9,
was showered with gifts Wed
nesday afternoon, July 17, at a
party given by the Cave Junc
tion Community church Mis
sionary society in the church
parlors.
The serving table was decor
ated with bouquets of carnations
and sweet peas and pink tapers
sur-ounding a bride doll. A fluf
fy pink and white umbrella de
corated with shasta daisies made
the gift table attractive.
Mrs. Marvin Cross officiated
at the coffee and tea service.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Cross,
Mr. and Mrs. Dwain Cross, of
Grants Pass, and Mrs. Phyllis
Saffer and her daughter Loretta
are planning to attend the wed
ding. Mrs. Saffer will sing while
Loretta is to be the flower girl.
Both Miss Cross and Mr. Haga
are attending Seattle Pacific
college, where he is preparing
for the ministry. They will con
tinue in their sophomore and
junior years respectively this
fall.
The prospective bridegroom is
the son of Mrs. Bert Haga of
Oak Harbor.
The bride-elect was graduated
from Illinois Valley High school
in 1956 as valedictorian of her
class. She left for Seattle after
spending a week with her par
ents on Dairy road.
Miss Knight, whose wedding
to Andrew Mellow, son of Mrs.
Isabel -Mellow is set for August
2, was honored at a shower giv
en by Mrs. Herb Salvage Wed
nesday, July 17.
Refreshments in pink and
white were served after Miss
Knight opened her many gifts.
Winners at games were Mrs.
Isabel Mellow and Mrs. Don
Zimmerman.
Mr. Mellow is presently em
ployed at the Park Auto Gro
cery store in Santa Rosa, where
he is living with his sister Mrs.
Robert Tregaskus. He and his
bride will live in Santa Rosa,
where he plans to attend junior
college, majoring in business
administration.
Mother and Son
Arrive in Azores
Gold Hill Mrs. Edmond
Davis and small son have ar
rived in the Azores where they
joined Mr. Davis, an airman first
class in the United States Air
Force. They left Medford July
10 by plane.
Mrs. Davis is a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mercer,
Gold Hill, and Mr. Davis' par
ents are Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Davis, 12 Kenwood avenue. The
young couple will spend two
years in the Azores.

Montevideo, at the grand coronation ball given as part of the
Miss Universe pageant in Long Beach. Calif., July 20. Cadet
Neill. son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Daniel Neill, 1415 West Eighth
street, is shown as he pinned an orchid on the beauty from
South America. Cadet Neill is one of the members of the
NavCad choir which sang during the final night of the Miss
Universe judging. The choir is stationed at Pensacola Naval

Marks Fortieth Anniversary
Central Point Open house
was held Sunday, July 21, at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Brown, Scenic avenue, Central
Point, in observance of the
Brown's fortieth wedding anni
versary. An anniversary cake
and other refreshments were
served.
Presiding at the tables were
Mrs. Eloise Logan, Central Point
and Mrs. Clarence Freeman,
Gold Hill, the Brown's daugh
ters. Also presiding were Mrs
Byron Brown, Gold Hill, daugh
ter-in-law of the Browns, and
their niece, Mrs. Max Josephson,
Central Point.
Out of town guests here for
the occasion were Mr. Brown's
sister, Mrs. Alice Kessler, Placer
ville, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. James
Evans and family, Lakeview;
Mr. and Mrs. Halber Haukli,
Yreka, Mrs. Viola Acord, Chico,
and Mrs. Mattie Evans, Susan

Tom Davidson
Named Officer
Of DOKK Group
Royal Vizier Tom Davidson of
Fuhat Burkan temple, Dramatic
Order Knights of Khorassan of
Medford, was elected vice presi
dent for Oregon at a convention
and ceremonial staged at San
Jose Calif., by the Far West
DOKK Temples association on
July 20 and 21.
Three western provinces of i
Canada and eight western states
are included in this group.
All santhas of Nomads of
Avrudaka in this area are also
a part of this association.
It will be remembered ,this
convention was held in Medford
two years ago and in Reno last
year.
El Keldah temple of Kellogg,
Idaho was chosen as the host
and convention city for 1958. A
vice president -is elected from
each state and province to work
with the Nomads of Avrudaka
and Dokey temples.
Mr. Davidson reported that
several officers from the im
perial palace were present a!

Prince Ray Schilling of Butte,
Mont., Imperial Adool Vernon
C. Cash of Monrovia, Calif., and
the imperial azim of Seattle,
Wash., Leslie E. Vannice as well
as several imperial nomad of

Burkan temple will be in Rose
burg, Saturday, August 3 in the
Pythian hall at 8 p.m.
At the meeting held last Mon
day by Talisman lodge, Knights
of Pythias in the Pythian build
ing, plans were made for a fam
ily style picnic to be held joint
ly by members of the Knights
of Pythias, Pythian Sisters, Sun
shine girls, Dokeys and Nomads
of Avrudaka from Grants Pass,
Roseburg, B a n d o n, Klamath
Falls, Yreka and Medford.
A meeting in Grants Pass last
Wednesday was attended by
Tom Davidson, Carl Fichtner
and Joe Fritsch all of Medford,
who assisted in conferring the
rank of knight on several
esquires. The picnic was dis
cussed and a tentative date set
for Sunday, August 25 at Rogue
River park in Rogue River.
Past chancellor and former
scoutmaster of Troop 16, George
Bryant, was given a vote of
thanks for his scout work. This
troop is sponsored by the local
Pythian lodge. John E. Schroed
er is the new scoutmaster.
Portland Plans
Outdoor Opera
Portland The opera "Rigo
letto," by Giuseppe Verdi, will
be presented by the West Coast
Opera Theatre in the outdoor
amphitheatre in Wa s h i n gt o n
park here next month.
Performances will be at 8
p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10; at 5
p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11; and at
8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12 The
public is admitted free of charge.

To Hold Luncheon
Whenever a fifth Wednesday
occurs on the calendar, it is
observed as a social meeting for
the Medford Townsend club
and auxiliary. July 31 a box
lunch will be held at Carpen
ter's Union hall, at 12:30 p.m.
Women members are to bring
boxes with food for two people.
Any visiting friends are wel
come. At last week's club meeting
36 members were present. Mrs.
Thornton Arnold, club president,
read the Washington, D.C., News

reported.

birthday greetings and a birth

A letter from Oregon Towns
end club director, Finis L. Snod
grass, indicated that Dr. Fran
cis E. Townsend and son, Rob
ert, plan to visit all Oregon
state Townsend clubs before the
end of summer.
A national senior citizens day
may be inaugurated by the 85th
congress for the fourth Sunday
in September each year. One
of the resolutions' adopted at the
seventeenth national convention
held in Denver, Colo., concern
ed such a day.
The meeting closed with a
penny march and readings.
Cavemen Sponsor
Grants Pass Dance
Grants Pass Harley Smith,
well known square dance caller
from Los Angeles, will call for
a dance planned August 3 by the
Cavemen Squares of Grants
Pasr. The dance will be held at
the Josephine county f a i r
grounds beginning at 8:30 p.m.
and all square dancers of the
area are invited to attend.
Mr. Smith will be accompan
ied by his wife and the two will
give round dance exhibitions
during the evening. Mr. Smith is
said to be popular in the west as
a caller.

Fidelity club will meet with
Mrs. Frank Fanger, Jackson
ville highway, a 12 noon Wed
nesday, July 31. Members will
have a potluck picnic.
Medford Callers
To Take Part in
All-State Festival
Douglas Fosbury and Francis
Cronin, two promininet square
dance callers of the Medford
area, are to appear at the Ore
gon state festival of square dance
groups in Roseburg, August 23
25. Mr. Fosbury will have the
added distinction cf serving as
master of ceremonies for a por
tion of the program. He has an
active schedule of square dance
calling in the Mediord area, be
ing engaged at the recently re
opened "Square Corral" and
also calling for the Y Knot
Twirlers. Round dance classes
are conducted by Mrs. Fosbury
at the YMCA every Monday
night.
Mr. Cronin calls for the Hill
toppers club on Old Military
road, and is caller- i nstructor
with the Double H Square dance
group. He has been actively en
gaged in square dancing for the
last four years.
Outstanding callers from all
points of the state are sched
uled to appear at the Roseburg
festival.
