    Medford, Roseburg Tangle Here
In Legion Play-Off Mix Tonight
Southwestern Oregon district
championship in American Le
gion junior baseball will be set
tled this evening in the wind-up
of a big day of the national pas
time at the fairgrounds diamond
here.
Roseburg and Medford Legion
clubs scuffle starting at 6:30
p.m. The two teams are engaged
in a two-of-three week end play
off and, if each has a victory in
the book after one game tonight,
a second tussle will follow, mak
ing this evening's skirmishing a
potential doubleheader.
The teams opened their series
last night at Roseburg.
Winner of the week end play
will advance into the semi-finals
of the Oregon play-offs.
Roseburg's Lockwood Motors
aggregation is fighting to follow
the trail blazed by last year's
Umpqua valley team which wont
to the national tournament and
took third place in that event.
Medford on the other hand aims
at ending years of frustration in
Legion ball.
Biisonelle Out
Just a handful of players who
attained the high honors for
Lockwood last year have been
on hand this season and one of
them is now out of action for the
rest of the campaign. When Lar
ry Bissonette fractured his ankle
in the game last Wednesday with
North Bend, Roseburg lost its
shortstop and No. 1 hitter.
Just how much difference his
absence means remains to be
shown in the current series. One
thing Roseburg has that Medford
Is short on is depth. Don Wells,
John Arana or Ted Kolberg
could step into the position.
Medford moundsman or men
for tonight will be chosen from
among Dennis Barr, Tom Laur
ence and Wayne Allen. Roseburg
has Ron Beamer, Allen Smith,
Dtck Meredith, Bill Eswine and
John Livingston as pitcher pos
sibilities. The Legion brand of ball is
'The Baseball" in the Roseburg
area. It has been drawing sizable
crowds. A large following from
the Umpqua capital could be on
hand this evening and unless the
local turnout is better than it
has been at the fairgrounds this
season, visitor fans may outnum
ber rooters for the home team.
Despite the loss of Bissonette,
the Roseburg gang is still con
sidered of state title caliber
again this year. If the Medford
ites can spill the dope, after two
previous losses to the Lockwood
team this summer, it will raise
their stature tremendously.
The Lockwoods got off to a
ragged start, then hit their stride
and were helped along with their
good balance and fine depth.
There's opinion, that with the
progress made, Roseburg now
has an all-around better team
than that of 1956. But the Med
ford nine has shown correspond
ing improvement this season.

declared today that Argentina's
unbeaten Alex Miteff "is just
about as good" as heavyweight
challenger Tommy (Hurricane)
Jackson.
The 22-year-old Miteff "made
a believer" of Mederos Friday
night when he scored a seventh
round technical knockout over
the Cuban at the Capitol arena.
Mederos went 10 rounds wtth
Jackson last year but never had
a chance with Miteff and lost all
six rounds.
Relentless Pounding
Referee Ray Bowen halted the
slaughter just before the bell
sounded for the seventh round
after Mederos lurched virtually
through the ropes at the conclu
sion of the sixth session. Miteff's
relentless pounding had cut Me
deros under the left eye and
puffed his right eye almost
closed.
Milteff, who weighed 2024 to
his opponent's 197V2, made a
human punching bag of Mederos
from the opening bell and almost
stopped him in the first round.
There were no knockdowns
but Mederos was "ouf'on his
feet at the end of the round and
never was able to take the of

rounder. St. Bernard dogs bear the
