Week End Bicycle
Riding Proposed
Washington IW President
Eisenhower's youth fitness direc
tor today proposed that New
York's Fifth ave. and main
streets throughout the nation be
restricted to bicycling on week
ends.
Shane McCarthy, executive di
rector of the President's Youth
Fitness council, said that power
steering, power brakes, televi
sion and electric golf carts have
turned the mid-20th century in
America into "a period of hu
man erosion.
Inactivity can cause rot," he
declared.
But he said by taking to bicy
cle riding Americans can over
come their "phlegmatic, soft
habits.
The rugged 49-year-old bicycle
enthusiast, who talks with an
Irish brogue, said to encourage
bicycling Americans should:
Close off main streets and
parks to auto traffic and permit
only walking, roller skating and
cycling. Reserve one lane of
some other streets for cyclists.
Designate secondary roads,
drained of most traffic by the
new super highways as "human
highways" for cycling and walking.
Man Slightly Hurt
In Highway 99 Crash
One man was slightly injured
in a headon collision of two
cars on Highway 99 south of
Ashland yesterday, according
to state police.
State police said Allen R.
Stoddard, 42, of Vancouver,
B.C., was taken to Ashland Gen
eral hospital, treated for a cut
lip, and released.
Stoddardt was a passenger in
a car driven by his wife, Jesse
Stoddart, which was going
north, police said, when it
swung too wide on a sharp
curve and collided with a car
driven by Everett C. Jurl, 56,
of Yreka.
The accident occurred about
4:30 p.m. State police cited Mrs.
Stoddart for failure to operate
on the right side of the highway.
