Persons Who Fear

Commonly, today, a man gets
a slight coronary attack or what

for a few weck.t; lie Ims no more
symptoms, and wJiru lie liHs up
he finds that he can walk
around as comfortably n he
ever did before, lie may cvrm
lie able to walk up two fllulita
of stairs without ct-1 1 i 1 1 y any
pain or any shortness of Inealh.
To a good heart .iccluli-.l this
would mean that he waa well,
and that the little scar in his
heart would not bothrr him any
more. But perhaps his doctor
is a pessimist who says, "Well,
you had better go easy; never !
walk upstairs; move into a house
with only one floor; don't smoke;
don't eat meat; don't eat much
fat; don't salt your food; don't
drive your car, and don't make
love to your wife." All this is i
enough to make a nervous wreck j
out of some men.
But even when the doctor
says, You are now perfectly
well; you are cured; you don't
have to worry any more; go ;
about your business as you al
ways have done; go ahead and
play 18 holes of golf if you can
do it comfortably; do' anything
you can do without getting pain
or shortness of breath; eat what
you like: smoke, and take a cou
ple of drinks before dinner if
you want to," the man may be
so terribly worried that he goes
around feeling his pulse; he lives
in an agony of fear,, and he
doesn't dare go back to work
I point out to all men like
this that it may be that they have
a little scar in their heart
muscle, but it is so small that it
is doing them about as much
harm as would a scar in the end
of their little finger. To all prac
tical purposes they are hale and
hearty, and they must quit fear
ing heart disease. They must
stop going to the doctor all the
time to get new electrocardio
grams made; and they must stop
behaving as if they were trying
desperately to find something
awfully wrong.
Leukemia
Many ask, "What is leuke
mia?" It is a cancer of the blood
forming organs which causes the
blood to be filled with countless
billions of abnormal types of
white blood corpuscles. There
are several kinds of leukemia
with different grades of malig
nancy. There is one rare type in
which the disease does not ad
vance, and the person can live
for years. Then there are the
chronic forms which often now
are greatly helped or apparently
cured by a radiation of some
type. Often these people have
an enormous spleen which feels j
like a tumor in the upper left ,
quadrant of the abdomen. Treat-1
ment of this spleen with x-rays
or other forms of radiation may
bring a remission of symptoms.
Sometimes this remission will
last for several years or for so
long that it looks as if a cure
had been worked. Nowadays,
siiii;eons are helping some pa
tnnls by retnovuuf the biE
