with Los Angeles, winning the
opener, 3-1, then dropping the
nightcap 7-3. That, in itself
would not have given Hollywood
second place, but Sacramento
pushed things along by taking
both ends of its twin bill with
Vancouver, 2-1, and 2-0,
Portland split with San Diego,
losing to the Pads, 2-1, in the
opener, then winning the second
game, 1-0. In Seattle, the Ram-
iers dumped league leading San
Francisco 8-2 in the evening's
only single bill,

SOUTHWEST Summer
steelhead angling was slow over
the week end on the Umqpue,

Trout angling is fair on the
Vorth Umqpua river. Trout
angling is fair on Lemola and
Toketee reservoirs. Coos Bayl
salmon fishing is good to excel
lent, with silvers predominating.
Salmon angling on the low
er Rogue river is fair to good.
CENTRAL Fishing has been fair at
East lake. Some rainbow 16-18 inches
have been taken on troll with flat
fish. Pauline lake has been fair for
fish from 6-9 inches. Fishing is good
at Big Lava lake on troll. Kokanee
are hitting at Crane Prairie. Fishing
is excellent at Three Creeks lake.
South Twin lake Is good on single sal
mon eggs. North Twin lake is fair.
Wickiup reservoir is good. Some good
catches have been reported in the
evenings. Odell and Davis lakes are
only fair. Diamond lake has been
good with many fish 18 to 12 inches
caught with a few large fish from 2
to 4 pounds. Lake of the Woods has
been fair in early morning or eve
ning. Williamson river has been slow.
NORTHEAST John Day dredge
ponds have been producing the past
week as have the ponds at Granite.
The north fork of the John Day and
the upper main John Day have been
good. The upper Umatilla and upper
Walla Walla rivers are producing nice
catches of trout. McKay reservoir is
fair on troll. Sturgeon fishing has been
good below McNary dam. Fly fishing
has been producing on the Imnaha
river. The Wallowa and Lostine riv
ers are producing some catches of fair
size rainbow. Sturgeon fishing has
been good on the Snake river below
Homestead.
SOUTHEAST Malheur county:
Owyhee reservoir is fair to excellent
tor crappie in the evening Owyhee
river is fair to good for planted trout.
Malheur reservoir is fair to good for
late evening fly fishing; trolling is
mostly poor. North fork Malheur river
is fair to good for small rainbow
above Beulah reservoir and near the
north fork guard station. Lake county:
Fishing la generally poor in most
streams.
NORTHWEST Trout angling most
ly slow in north coast streams. Sal
mon fishing is good in the ocean off
the mouth of the Columbia river.
Trout angling is slow in the Tilla
mook area. A few sea-run cutthroat
are in the Nestucca up to Three riv
ers. The Little Nestucca is reported
fair for cutthroats in tidewater. A few
Chinook have been taken at the jaws
of Nestucca bay. Lake Lytle and
Spring lake are producing fair for
trout and good for largemouth bass.
Jetty and rock fishing has been good.
Devils lake trout fishing has been slow
to fair. Yaquina bay salmon fishing
has been fair. Siuslaw sea-run cut
throat fishing has been fair in tide
water. The Sandy river is colored
from the Mt. Hood snow melt, and
trout angling is slow. The Clackamas
is fair in the upstream portions. Fish
ing continues fair on the upper Wil
lamette valley streams. Reservoirs are
foor to fair. Clear lake is fair to good
or trout. Other lakes in the Cascades
are generally good for fly fishing dur
ing the evening hours.

Borkowski in the second frame.
But the Pads bounced back with
their two winning runs in the
same inning. Winner Jim Grant
allowed but three hits during
the seven inning game.

told but to no avail. The Rain

A short but brilliant piece of
relief pitching by lefty - Jim
Bailey cut off a Salem rally
Wednesday to give Wenatchee a
narrow 5-4 win and another
lease on top spot in Northwest
league standings.
Determined Eugene kept on
the pace by sneaking past Lewis
ton, 2-1, and Tri-City played
dead again for Yakima, 10-4.
Wenatchee's sixth straight
win kept them one and a half
games out front of Eugene. Fire
man Bailey came on in the ninth
to fan Gene Tanselli with two
out, two on and three runs in.
Eugen's Mel Krause scored to
break a 0-0 tie, but Lewiston
pitcher Thornton Kipper pulled
the Broncs back even in the
eighth with a solo homer. Pete
Mikacich put the Emeralds out
front for good in the botton of
the eighth on their second and
final tally. .
A wild pitch helped along Tri
City's undoing at Yakima. Two
runs down in their half of the
first, the Bears sent Eenie Wil
cox to first when a called wild
pitch bounced off catcher Joe
Zavattaro's chest protector.
Then Ken Meyer and Vince
Moreci struck out only to have
Herm Lewis single and Herb
Anderson clean it up with a
three-run homer. Yakima was
never in serious trouble thereafter.

Dick Wooton, Camp White
catcher and first baseman,
gained a share of the Rogue
Valley Baseball league batting
leadership last week end with
out having to pick up his
bludgeon.
He and Ron Maurer, Cave
Junction catcher, with .500 aver
ages, head the list of RVL bats
men who have had 20 or more
official trips to the plate. Maurer
had a .519 mark after games
through July 14 for 14 hits in
27 times up but swatted just one
for three last Sunday.
Camp While Had a Bye
Frank Roelandt, Medford
manager, and another catcher,
is third in the batting averages
among those who have seen
most turns at the plate. He's
hitting .474. Roelandt, out of the
game early because of a finger
injury last Sunday was zero for
two after holding a .500 pre
viously for the loop season.
Bartow Hits .571
Ron Owings, Medford, is
fourth in the order with .429
while Jim McAbee, Ashland
Talent, and Tom Prestianni,
Glendale are next with .419
apiece.
Best average in the circuit,
however, is sported by Jerry
Bartow, Medford, who had a late
start with the Studs. He has .571
for 14 times up.
Maurer remained No. 1 in
runs batted in with 19 and Roe
landt and John Kovenz, Med
ford, have 13 each. Roelandt is
still leader in runs and hits with
18 each.
Bartow recorded his third
league pitching victory against
no losses against Glendale last
Sunday to pull up close to Duane
Sides, Medford mound standby
of the early season. Sides is
hurling leader with four vic
tories and no defeats. Ranking
next among chuckers with most
service is Jim Eggers, Cave
Junction with 3-1.

Eggers holds the strikeout
lead in the RVL with 41 in 39
innings while Bartow is next
with 39 in 29 innings.
Batters have got the most
hits off John Zimmerlee, Butte
Falls, with 41 in 17 23 frames
and the most runs off Jim Smith,
Grants Pass, with 32 in 16 13
innings. Eggers has yielded the
most bases on balls with 19.
The fact that Bartow has given
up just 15 hits, seven runs and
five bases on balls is indication
of his effectiveness.
Mark Fitch, Ashland, has dbne
the most pitching with 42 23
innings in the circuit.
Games this Sunday are Cave
Junction at Medford, Butte Falls
at Grants Pass and Camp White
at Glendale.

by becoming the first rookie to
win 20 games for the Philadel
phia Phillies in 46 years.
The Phillies haven't had a
rookie win 20 games since Gro
ver Cleveland Alexander did it
in 1911 but the 27-year-old
speedballer from Wellesley,
Mass., raised his record to 13-3
Wednesday night with a 3-1 vic
tory over the Milwaukee Braves.
The St Louis Cardinals moved
to within a game and a half of
the first-place Braves when Lar
ry Jackson shut out the Brook
lyn Dodgers, 3-0, and the Cincin
nati Redlegs were only two
games from the top after Joe
Nuxhall downed the Pittsburgh
Pirates, 2-0. The Chicago Cubs
shaded the New York Giants,
2-1, in the other National League
game.

the New York Yankees while the
third-place Boston Red Sox kept
moving at a brisk pace with a
6-5 decision over the Kansas City
Athletics. The Detroit Tigers
beat the Baltimore Orioles, -5-1,
and the Washington Senators
scored a 5-4 victory after losing
to the Cleveland Indians, 4-3, in
other AL activity.
Sanford, who took 10 years to
reach the majors, struck out
eight Braves to raise his league
leading total to 124. He also de
livered the game-winning blow
when he doubled home Willie
Jones in the seventh inning. He
yielded the Braves' run in the
bottom of the frame when Wes
Covington homered.
Jackson turned in his 11th win
for the Cardinals with a nifty
three-hitter, striking out eight.
Del Ennis doubled home the
Cardinals' first run and Al Dark
scored the other runs after his
two triples. Sal Maglie was the
loser.
Nuxhall pitched an eight-hitter
for the Redlegs who scored both
their runs against Bob Friend in
the third inning on singles by
Johnny Temple, Gus Bell and
Frank Robinson plus an error
by outfielder Bob Clements. The
loss was Friend's 13th against
11 wins.
Don Elston's seven-hitter en
abled the Cubs to beat the Giants
for the second straight game and
handed Johnny Antonelli his
10th setback. Jim Bolger's fifth
inning sacrifice fly brought in
the decisive run.

day to discuss an offer by the
Multnomah Kennel club after
threatening to refuse to enter
their in races here unless purses
were increased.
Owners met Wednesday night
but did not vote on whether to
accept the offer made earlier
in the day by Murray Kemp,
president of the Kennel Club.

of $5,300 per night. Dog owners
had asked a schedule with a

of the district run-off. Med

ford aims for an even better
