She is survived by two sons.

A complaint was filed by Ruth
Simmons, 5759 Crater Lake ave.,

Inc.. was listed as defendant.
The plaintiff asks a jury trial
and a judgment for special and
general damages in the amount
of $120,000. She charges that
on March 27 of this year a truck
and trailer owned by ONC was
"negligently operated into the
rear of an. automobile operated
by the plaintiff." The accident
scene is named as Riverside ave.,
Medford.
She claims that as a "direct
and proximate result of negli
gence of the defendant, plain
tiff received severe and perman
ent personal injuries . . . has
suffered physical pain and men

Blasts Got. Clement
With a blast at Gov. Frank
Clement, the lanky Yankee-born
segregationist said after his con
viction that "Tennessee has no
government" and the battle must
be won or lost in this state.
. In Clinton meanwhile the sec
ond integrated school year is ex
pected to start late next month
with 11 Negroes enrolled with
some 750 whites. The Negroes
will includue five who attended
last year. W. D. Human, the new
principal, said the school board
would set the exact opening
date.
The Clinton residents, whose
sentences along with Kasper's
were delayed pending new trial
motions, drove home through a
sultry east Tennessee afternoon.
They face possible sentences of
six months in jail and $1,000
fines.
Convicted of Conspiracy
Kasper and the others were
convicted of conspiring to vio
late U. S. District Judge Robert
L. Taylor's injunction against in
terference with the Clinton inte
gration. They were charged with
blocking the Negroes' route to
school and beating up a Baptist
minister who ran a heckling
gauntlet to deliver the Negroes
to class.
Residents Reminded
Of Refuse in Ditches
Jack Hoffbuhr, secretary
manager of Medford Irrigation
district, today reminded resi
dents that it is illegal to dump
refuse or other material in irri
gation ditches or drainage ditch
es. He said officials of all irriga
tion districts in this area have
found refuse in ditches, and in
some casees underground pipe
lines in the districts have been
clogged. Many newer sections of
the canal system are Installed
undeground.
Hoffubhr noted a recent bill
passed in the state legislature
amendin ga previous bill relat
ing to driftage in streams. The
bill provides that a fine of be
tween $50 to $500 can be im
posed without removing it.
He also pointed out that state
laws also prohibit pollution of
water in irrigation ditches or ir
rgation drainage ditches.

Pear Harvest May
Star) Next Week
Some valley orchardists may
start picking this year's Bartlett
pear crop next week, according
to County Horticultural Agent
Clifford Cordy.
Others plan to wait until the
week after. Cordy has invited all
orchardists to bring samples o
pears to his office in the county
court house to test for ripeness.
Cordy uses a testing device to
estimate how much fruit is now
ripe, and this helps orchardists
to determine how rapidly their
crop should be picked.
About eight normal pears
should be taken from the lower
inside part of a tree in the early
morning, and brought in for
testing the same morning they
are picked.
The d'Anjou harvest should
begin in about three weeks,
Cordy said, with bosc and co
mice harvests starting in early
September.

Dorris, Calif. HP! Two lum
ber workers today saved a Port
land, Ore., family of five from
drowning after a car went out
of control and sank in a log
pond here.
Rescued were Mr. and Mrs.
Carl Allen and their three chil
dren, Vicki. 8; Craig, 6, and
Debra, 2. Their rescuers were
James Chastain, Klamath Falls,
and Jess Addingtoa, Dorris.
California Highway Patrol
man Virgil Winkelman Jr. said
the car, driven by Mrs. Allen,
was approaching the south end
of Dorris when it struck a traf
fic sign, , went over on a shoulder
and plowed through dirt for 325
yards. Then, he said, the car
flipped into the air 15 feet and
landed on its wheels on four logs
floating in the Associated Lum
ber and Box Company log pond.
Chastain and Addington saw
the front end of the car extended
beyond the first log and then
saw it tip over ront first into
the water and vanish from sight.
They ran from the mill across
logs to the rescue. Chastain
dived into the water, opened the
car doors and pulled the chil
dren out, handing them to Ad
dington on the logs. Then he got
their parents out. They suffered
only slight lacerations, bruises
and shock.
Subcommittees Are
Apoinfed for Group
The Jackson county water re
sources committee and the
county court recently appointed
110 men to 11 subcommittees.
The subcommittees will col
lect information on the use of
tl-3 Rogue river in Jackson
county to aid a study of the
Rogue basin being made by the
Oregon Water Resources board.
' The entire group will meet in
the courthouse auditorium at 8
p.m. Aug. 6 to discuss plans.
The court has sent letters to
committee chairmen appointed,
and has asked to be notified of
their acceptance.
