Tic Douloureux
Tic douloureux is a horrible
disease that comes usually to old
ladies. It is a terrible neuralgia
that comes in
spells, s o m e
times touched
off by talking
or touching a
certain part of
the face, or
eating, or get
ting in a draft.
Sometimes I
can recognize
t h e se people
Alvarex
on the street because the woman
has a shawl around her neck and
face.
The sad thing is that usually
these people get all their good
teeth removed which never
does a particle of good. There is
a type of terrible neuralgia due
to the presence of a dead pulp
under a filling, but usually one
can recognize this in a minute
by noting that the awful jab of
pain comes when one eats or
drinks something hot. This
causes the gas in the pulp cham
ber to expand and press on the
dying nerve.
In true tic douloureux the
only procedures that do any
good are, first, to have the big
ganglion on the fifth nerve at
the base of the brain injected,
either with boiling water or al
cohol. If later, the pain comes
back, the ganglion can be uncov
ered with the new type of oper
ation, or it can be destroyed
with the old type of operation.
This work has to be done by an
expert who can be found in a big
medical center.
Since I have written about
persons who have equivalents of
epilepsy, or have a type of epi
lepsy in which there are no fits,
or in which perhaps there were
a few in early childhood, many
persons have asked me where
to go to get relief. There must
be a few million of these unhap
py people in the world. Most of
them tell me that they have a
violent and sometimes vile tem
per. Some are distressed because
they feel antagonistic to so many
people, or they get into fights
with people when they tried
hard not to. Some -are highly
nervous and go to psychiatrists.
Many of them tell me, when I
ask them, that their stream of
consciousness is not continuous.
For instance, the other day.
when I asked a woman, who I
suspected might be an epileptic,
if she ever noticed a break in
her stream of consciousness, she
said, "Yes, I am glad you asked
that. When I'm under the dryer
at a beauty parlor, suddenly the
noise will go off, and then, as
suddenly, it will come back
again." Other women tell me
they will find themselves in a
room without any memory of
how they got there. In many of
these cases, an electroencephalo
gram or record of the tiny elec
tric currents being formed in the
brain shows a typical epileptic
picture. If I ask the person if
there is epilepsy or a tendency
to violent temper or alcoholism
in her family, she will usually
say "Yes; I know where this
comes from."
Many of these patients I have
been able to help tremendously
with the help of Dilantin or oth
ers of the new anticonvulsive
drugs. I have several salesmen
who tell me that now as they
take the drug, their sales have
tripled and quadrupled because
they no longer get into fights
with their customers. A woman
of 55, who never in her life was
able to work because of the
stresses of an unrecognized epi
lepsy, is now happy, and earning
her living as a teacher of music.
Dilantin made a new woman of
her overnight.
Several of my patients who
came to me suffering torture
with horrible headaches immedi
ately became free on Dilantin.
Other patients who were suffer
ing from what looked like at
tacks of peritonitis with severe
abdominal pain or terrible
retching are now free on Dilan
tin. The best advice I can give to
people with symptoms such as I
describe is to write to Mr. Gray,
of the National Epilepsy League
(130 N. Wells St., Chicago 6,
111.) and ask him who, in their
city, would be a good man to see
as an expert on epilepsy.
Recently, the American Medi
cal Association's Council on
foods and Nutrition summed up
present knowledge on the sub
ject of diet and hardening of the
arteries, saying that their con
clusion was that quite a bit more
study will have to be made be
fore we doctors can start telling
our patients just which fats not
to eat. When the other day I
sat at breakfast with a promi
nent physician and told him
this, he immediately called the
waiter and said, "Bring me three
eggs and bacon. Oh boy; for the
last 6 months mv wife hasn't let

We doctors just don't know
enough yet, and we don't agree
about many items. The quantity
of fat eaten may still be as im
portant as the nature of the fat.
As I doubtless have said before
in this column, during the next
year or two experts will give us
much' information which we
now lack. Until I have this in
formation, all I am asking my
patients to do is to eat just
enough to maintain a normal
weight.
