Lumber Industry fo
Start Automation
Washington About 300 of
the nation's leading lumber
manufacturers, retailers and oth
er distributors plan to launch a
program designed to bring about
greater automation in the han
dling of lumber from the saw
mill to the retail level.
Sponsoring the effort are the
National Lumber Manufacturers
association and National Retail
Lumber Dealers association.
Mortimer B. Doyle, executive
vice president of NLMA, said
the progam will "seek to devel
op practical methods of packag
ing lumber at the sawmill so it
can be loaded and unloaded
from railroad freight cars by
completely mechanical means
Doyle explained that this
could "cut the handling costs of
both retailers and manufactur
ers and, at the same time, re
duce the damage sustained by
lumber and wood products dur
ing shipment."
Most lumber shipped by rail
today is loaded and unloaded
piece-by-piece with hand labor.
Although fork lift trucks and
other vehicles are used to move
stocks from the sawmill to the
freight cars and from freight
cars to the storage bins of the
wholesalers and retailers, con
siderable time and manual labor
is required to tranfer the lumber
to and from these vehicles and
cars.

Guy Johnson, regional dis
patcher, said more than 20 fires
had broken out because of the
lightning, including blazes in the
Malheur national forest in east

Campaign Launched
For Stricter Rules
At Beauty Contest
Long Beach, Calif. (W Miss
Universe officials today launch
ed a campaign to clamp down
on contest rules in the wake of
the most controversial pageant
in the six-year history of the an
nual event.
The controversy led to the dis
qualification of the judges' first
choice for Miss United States of
America and threatened to de
throne the newly crowned Miss
Universe, Peru's Gladys Zender.
It was disclosed Saturday
night at the coronation ball that
Miss Zender was only 17 years
old instead of the 18 that she
had claimed and the age contest
rules require. However, officials
took an international loophole
to get out of the predicament.
Allowed to Retain Title
Officials ruled that Miss Zen
der would retain the title she
won over 14 other international
beauties Friday because in her
native Peru she is regarded as
an adult. Miss Zender, who is
three months shy of 18, also
claimed that in Peru beauty
contest age limits start at 16.
Shortly after officials had an
nounced their last-minute ruling
they were flooded with tele
grams and telephone calls criti
cizing them for. being lenient
with the South American entry
and yet three days earlier dis
qualifying Miss U.S.A. for tell
ing a "fib."
Maryland's Leona Gage, who
was named Miss U.S.A. Thurs
day night, was sent home the
next day after she finally admit
ted that she was married and
the mother of two. Her title and
prize money were turned over
to Miss Utah, Charlotte Shef
field, who was runner-up among
the five girls in the Miss U.S.A.
finals.
Strict Screening
An official of the Max Factor
firm, co-sponsors of the pagenat,
said he would ask that a system
of strict screening of future en
trants be worked out at once.
Pageant officials were expected
to demand that applicants in
next year's contest produce pass
ports, birth certificates and affi
davits in support of their age
and marital status.
