Why Many People Fail
For years, I have been noting
that many of the down-and-out
and chronically ill people who
ccr.-.e irjto a
big city clinic
have failed in
life because
they were not
as sensible and
sane as they
should have
been. They
were too much
like some of
their peculiar
relatives. Now comes a Yale
sociologist, A. B. Hollinshead,
reporting to the Institute of Pre
ventive Psychiatry, that if one
goes into a poor part of a city
and studies the least successful
18 per cent of the people in the
city, one finds among them 53
per - cent of the mentally dis
turbed people in the whole com
munity. On the other hand, if
one goes into the better part
of the city, where the fine homes
are, and where the most success
ful 28 per cent of the people
live, one will find only 18 per
cent of the people (in the city)
who are mentally odd and mix-ed-up.
These facts can, of course, be
interpreted by different persons
in different ways to suit them,
but my impression is that the
figures mean what one would
expect namely, that a man
born with a low degree of in
telligence and a mixed-up mind
is so handicapped that he tends
to drift down to the lowest strata
of society. Often it is alcohol
that gets him down and keeps
him down, and the reason he
drinks is because his poor nerv
ous inheritance makes him -o
tense and nervous, and so un
happy and insecure.
Psychoanalysis Not Yet
Entirely Scientific
I just read that at the recent
meeting of the Academy of Psy
choanalysis, Dr. Roy R. Grinker,
director of the Institute for Psy
chosomatic and Psychiatric Re
search and Training, of Michael
Reese Hospital, in Chicago, did
a very brave and commendable
thing. According to the report,
he told his fellows that psycho
analysis had been allowed to
drift away from the biologic and
social sciences, and had ignored
scientific principles of strict test
ing of theories against facts. As
he said, it has become too much
a "closed system," isolated from
other scientific disciplines. He
believes now it can be reformed
and made into a science.
As some analysts have told
me privately, while there is
much of value that Freud dis
covered: he also did many quite
unscientific things, such as build
ing a huge structure of theory
on the basis of his weird inter
pretation of one case history or
one dream. A scientist would
never have published such a
theory until he had tested it
many times against more facts
obtained from many patients.
Actually, the other day when
I read in a recent book a com
ment on one of Freud's inter
pretations of a dream, I said to
myself, "No, no one, not even
Freud, could have written such
utter foolishness." So I reached
up to my shelf and, pulling down
the third volume of Freud's Col
lected Papers, I found the quote
was right. There I found the
astounding material which
makes me wonder how sane the
man could have been.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.

has raised its intelligence stand
ards in an effort to speed the dis
charge of more than 15,000 sail
ors. The Navy's action was
prompted by Defense Secretary
Charles E. Wilson's recent order
reducing the manpower strength
of the armed forces by 100.000.
To comply with the directive,
the Navy will have to cut 15,900
from its rolls by next January.
Navy Secretary Thomas S.
Gates Jr. told Navy commanders
to force the discharge of enlisted
men with scores of less than 42
on the Navy's "General Classifi
cation Test." Highest possible
score is 77; the Navy average is
48.9.
The Navy also said it intends
to reduce its officer strength by
1,635 mainly by releasing junior
reserve officers now on active
duty.
