ever leftovers his father could salvage
from a small tailor shop.
The son of a Hungarian immigrant, Tony
couldn't even speak English when he
started grammar school but was already
proficient in gang-fighting and dodging the
law. The Bernie Schwartz story was head
ed for a Dead End finish until a truant
officer dragged the boy to the Jones
Memorial Settlement House where social
worker Paul Schwartz no relation took
the chip off Tony's shoulder and taught
him honesty and self-respect.
Tony quit high school six months before
graduation to join the Navy during World
War II. Under the G. I. Bill of Rights, he
later enrolled in a dramatic school, and
two years later was flown to Hollywood
by Universal-International for a screen
tryout and his first taste of extravagant
living. He loved it.
"I felt like a king," he recalls. "A shiny
studio limousine met me at the airport
and whisked me to a plush suite at a
swank Hollywood hotel. I slept late the
next morning and had breakfast in bed
for the first time in my life.
"And do you know how much dough I
had? Four dollars and 12 cents. I made
up my mind right then that this was the
life for me.".
Tony has made good both in his career
and his determination to live in the un
sparing movie-star tradition. He has ev
erything the matinee idol should have,
including a beautiful blonde wife, screen
actress Janet Leigh.
Critics complain that Tony's success
came too quickly and he can't handle his
sudden wealth. But friends know better,
hey maintain if he were still Bernie
Schwartz in the Bronx, he'd be living
higher, wider, and handsomer than the
guy next door.
And he'd do it so amiably that even the
neighbor would like him for it.
