WATCH THOSE FINGERS Tex, one of two snapping
alligator turtles taking up residence with the California
Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, looks like he's
trying to get a snap at Junior, being held on his head.
Junior, the other snapping alligator turtle, is only eight
months old. Tex's age is not known, but scientists with
the academy estimated that he is well over 25 years. He
weighs close to 100 pounds.

Youth Regains Title
For Endurance .
Portland OPi Jerry Hiersche,
Portland, early Saturday regain
ed his underwater endurance
championship by staying sub
merged in a tank of water for
28 hours. 55 minutes.
Hiersche, 18-year-old Portland
skin diver, remained in the tank
in front of the Foster sporting
goods store at 8030 SE Harold
St. after he broke the record at
12:46 a.m. His sponsors said he
intended to remain underwater
for at least 40 hours so that his
record might stand during his
three-year enlistment in the Ma
rine Corps.
A federal jury cleared Hoffa
Friday of charges that he bribed
a Senate Rackets committee in
vestigator, John Cye Cheasty, to
steal committee secrets during
its investigation of the giant
Teamsters Union.
The vedict presumably cleared
the way for Hoffa's expected
drive to succeed retiring Team
ster President Dave Beck a
prime . target of the Rackets
committee.
To Meet Friends
"Little Jimmy" long re
garded Beck's heir apparent
said he will meet with his union
friends in Chicago within a
week "to decide what my future
activities will be."
Hoffa, czar of a Midwest
Teamster empire, would oppose
a cleanup ticket backed by
Beck's foe. Secretary-treasurer
John English.
Rackets Committee Chairman
John L. McClellan D-Ark.)
served notice that his New York
hearings wil begin soon. He de
clined direct comment on
Hoffa's acquittal but said Hoffa's
name figures in the New York
phase of the committee's inquiry
and he "might" be called. Sen.
Irving M. Ives (R-N.Y.), top
ranking Republican Rackets
committee member, said more
directly "I anticipate that he
will."
"Miscarriage of Justice"
"While I have not been able
to attend the Hoffa trial per
sonally, the information which
has come to me would indicate
that this verdict is a miscarriage
of justice," Ives said.
Spectators who heard the
foreman of a federal court jury
say "not guilty" after four hours
and 40 minutes of deliberation,
disagreed. A marshal bellowed
"Quiet in the courtroom" as a
burst of cheering came from the
white spectators.
Hoffa thanked attorney Ed
ward Bennett Williams and his
aides. He thanked the mostly
Negro 4ury and said its verdict
"proved once again that if you
are honest and tell the truth you
have nothing to fear."
Hoffa's attorney promised
jestingly to send a parachute to
Rackets committee counsel Rob
ert F. Kennedy who had said
he would jump off the Capitol
dome if Hoffa were acquitted.
