Hollywood
By ALINE MOSBY
Hollywood OPi Gossip col
umn item: "Gene Nelson is not
doing so well since his divorce
Hes teaching
dancing."
Nelson sput
tered when he
read that. Ac-
tually the
dancing star
of "Ok 1 a h o
ma!" is the
most sought-
after profes-
Aline mosdv sor among lo
cal tap schools because it's one
way to keep his feet in shape
since he's turned dramatic actor
Both movies and TV produce
less musicals than in past years
so Gene switched to a dramatic
career while working toward
Broadway show.
Recently his old friend, Nico
Charisse (ex-husband of Cyd
Charisse), asked Gene to save
the day when a teacher quit at
the Charisse dance studios. Gene
happily turned instructor.
Teaching Defended
"That item makes it sound as
if teaching is something to be
shunned," he said indignantly.
"It isn't. It's helped me a lot. It
gives me an opportunity to try
out my ideas and experiment
with dance theories, and keeps
me in shape. ,
"I've never taught before. 1
started this just to help Nico but
now I want to keep on with it
whenever it doesn't interfere
with roles.
"Sure, I miss musicals. If it
hadn't been for producers ac
cepting me in dramatic roles, I'd
be starving. They don't make
many musicals any more.
"But every career has its ups
and downs I'm not bitter. If
you like this business, you're in
it for everything it offers, the
good and the bad. When you're
not working you have to keep
your mind in a clear way so you
don't become unhappy."
Work Outlined
Nelson teaches three nights a
week at the Charisse studio.
Classes tripled when word got
around you .could learn dancing
from a movie star. His pupils
range from beginning starlets to
professional dancers plus
housewives who want to take off
a bulge or two and learn to be
graceful.
Nelson's last movie musical
was "Oklahoma!" and he ap
peared last fall in a TV spectac
ular with Nanette Fabray that
involved more singing than
dancing.
But Gene has been able to
make a successful transition to
dramatic roles and has starred
in numerous TV dramas. Next
month he leaves his classes to
star in a dramatic role in a the
atrical movie, "The Natchez
Trace." Then he travels to New
York to sign, he hopes, for a
Broadway musical.

Have you a one - year - old
child? Or do any of your friends,
relatives or acquaintances posses
an infant of that age? What did
the child say first "Mama'' or
"Papa"? What was the third
word spoken by the infant? How
many words does the child know
now? To be rated intelligent and
with a promise of a good future,
a one-year-old child should have
a vocabulary of about 20 words.
The average adult has a vocabu
lary of about 6,000 words.
Horses and Women
Am reliably informed a group
of red-haired women is subject
ing our Houses and Women De
partment pamphlet titled "How
to Handle a Red-Haired Wo
men" to a very careful examina
tion. They are, according to the
report, also discussing the man
ner of handling suggested by
cur experts with a view toward
developing a defense for it.
Should other groups of flaming
tressed females have similar
ideas this could prove a serious
handicap to many of our sub
scribers who are matrimonially
allied to red-haired women. I
have called a special meeting of
our Horses and Women experts
to aiscuss it.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. Have
heard several versions of the
pronunciation of the name of
the Dutch artist. Van Gogh.
What is yours? A. Correct pro
nunciation is "Van Gok.'
Q. What is the U. S. record for
largest rainbow trout caught?
Also muskellunge. A. Rainbow
Trout "record is 37 pounds.
Caught at Lake Pend Oreille,
Idaho, in 1947. Muskellunge rec
ord is 69 1116 pounds caught
at Chippewa Flowage, Wis., in
1949. . . Q. Is the title of that
old song "Roses Are Bloming in
Picardy" or Rose Are Shining in
Picardy"? A. The title is "Roses

cause of the dew on them.
Style Sense
Tailors for men have a better
style sense than women who de
sign attire for women. The men
have a greater talent for effect
ive simplicity. In what type of
garment do women appear the
smartest and most fashionably
garbed? It is the so-called "tail
ored suit." That extremely popu
lar garment was originated for
women by a British tailor whose
patrons were ' mostly men. He
felt sorry for the way so many
women appeared in street attire
and wanted to do something for
them. The tailored suit elimina
ted the bustle and paved the way
for sports clothes for women.
Heredity
Florence Quartararo, lyric
soprano, has married Italo Tajo
basso. What type of voice do you
think a male child born of. this
union would have? Has there
ever been a great opera star
whose parents were both opera
stars? I can't recall any. Come
to think of it, what singing star
in any branch of the entertain
ment field has had a son or
daughter who also became a
singing star?
Please Note
Where are the best sea food
restaurants in this country lo
cated? I would say in New York
City, Boston, Baltimore, San
Francisco and Seattle in the
order named. What is considered
the best sea food restaurant in
your section? How many varie
ties of roe does it feature? "Slop
py Louie's" sea food restaurant
in the Fulton Fish Market dis
trict in Manhattan has featured
shad roe, cod roe, sturgeon roe,
lemon sole roe mackerel roe,
herring roe and yellow pike roe.
Those Anniversaries
The 50th wedding anniversary
is the golden wedding, the 55th
the emerald, the 75th the dia
mond. That you know. What is
your opinion of this arrange
ment? I think rt is silly. The
time for a woman to be pre
sented with gold, emerald and
diamonds is when she is young.
I intend to conduct my campaign
for a revision of the wedding
anniversary list with renewed
vigor. I have already deciaea
on two new anniversaries. The
first to be the "What the Young
Couple Needs" anniversary and
the fifth the "Mink Wedding."
On the latter anniversary all
the wife's friends will chip in
and buy her a mink coat.

Is That So?
Rainmaking is a modern
scientific fact although in the
past century it was largely a
fake. Prior to that it was noth-
: ing more than a hope
In one way or another, prac
tically every primitive tribe
which lived in an arid area has
tried to make it rain. They em
ployed magic, special rain
dances, and invoked deities with
sacrifices to induce rain.
Strictly by coincidence, rain
followed these efforts often
enough to keep the belief alive
that these primitive sacrifices
and dances induced rain.
In the past century, there was
quite a boom in rainmaking
point out the authors of Weath
er (Simon & Schuster, N. Y.)
Drums were were beaten, can
nons shot, and explosives set
off producing great quantities
of smoke. Needless to say, the
methods were worthless and so
were many of the operators.
One of the smoothest of these
confidence men and the most
"successful" never appeared in
a drought area until it was al
most certain from studying U.S.
weather bureau data that rain
was but a few days away. Then
he would put on his act, wait
for the rain, and collect his fee
from a grateful citizenry.
In contrast to this fakery,
modern rainmaking techniques
are based on known facts of how
to get the tiny miniscule drop
lets of water in clouds to "coal
esce" and drop as snow or rain.
All of these modern techniques
employ the "seeding" technique
getting artificial nuclei into
potential rain clouds.
Such cloud "seeding" cannot
be successful however unless
conditions are nearly right for
natural rainfall. But this is not
to minimize the fact that under
the right conditions, it can cause
more rain to fall than would
occur with undisturbed natural
conditions.
Most seeding is done today
with dry. ice (frozen carbon di
oxide) and silver iodide.
Droplets Crystallize
With finely ground dry Ice
(which has a temperature of 108
degrees below Zero, F.) cloud
droplets crystallize along its
path. These grow rapidly at the
expense of the water droplets
around them and soon become
large enough to fall. Silver
iodide has a molecular structure
nearly identical with that of ice
and it acts directly as a nucleus
for ice formation. These ice
crystals also grow until they fall.
Not much material is needed.
One pound of dry ice spread by
a plane may start a shower in
large cumulus clouds. But silver
iodide has a decided advantage
being less expensive to use.
Scientists Develop
New Burn Medicine
Chicago IP) Scientists say
they have made another advance
in methods designed to prevent
deaths from severe burns.
Drs. R. Carl Millican, Sanford
M. Rosenthal and John D. Rust
told the Federation of American
Societies for Experimental Biol
ogy and Medicine that they have
found what may be an effective
protection from late deaths of
burn victims caused by a type
of infection which has been
highly resistant to all commonly
used antibiotics.
The trio said this infection
causes many post-burn fatalities,
but can be controlled with hu
man gamma globulin, a constit
uent of blood.
The three doctors earlier de
veloped the simple oral salt and
soda treatment which proved
effective for burn shock during
clinical trials held this year. The
new post-burn treatment now is
being scheduled for clinical
trials, too.

It can be sent up from the ground
to clouds from special genera
tors. To date, rainmaking by cloud
seeding cannot produce rain
from fair - weather cumulus
clouds those puffy, cauliflower-like
clouds which usually
form by day in rising warm air
and disappear at night. Nor is
it possible as yet for' cloud
seeding to induce rain to fall
over a widespread area.
But then cloud seeding is
still in its infancy.
