blabber-mouth.
Lucy P. I try to get help
with our problems.
Martin P. My wife and I
have been married ten years
and have four children. We've
had our ups and downs with ill
nesses and money problems, but
Just the same we could be a lot
happier than we've been if
she'd stop being such a blabber
mouth.
Lucy is the type who goes
running to the telephone to tell
her whole family and all her
friends about anything that is
on her mind at the moment
These things get around and I
sometimes run into people in
business who seem to know
more about me and my troubles
than I do.
Sometimes I think that Lucy
is deliberately trying to talk me
down and show everyone what
a shmo I am. I've made plenty
of mistakes, I know. I haven't
given Lucy an easy time of it,
but does everyone have to
know?
Lucy P. Martin hasn't told
about half the trouble we've
had. We are in debt, but he
still lets people take advantage
of him. He doesn't have a good
business head, but he refuses to
quit business and take a job. He
has no confidence in himself.
but he won't go to others for
help.
When Martin comes and tells
me about his different problems,
I don't know what to tell him

Oregon Highway
Traffic Count Up
Salem W Highway traffic
during June was up 1.3 per cent,
according to the monthly traffic
count made by the State High
way department at 28 rural au
tomatic counter locations.
Biggest increase occurred on
U.S. 20 five miles east of Bend
where a 15.7 per cent gain over
June of 1956 was recorded.
Highway 99 showed an 8.6
per cent increase near Halsey
and at Otter Rock on U.S. 101
traffic was up 7.9 per cent.
Near Rainier on U.S. 30 an
11.3 per cent increase was re
corded and at Valley Junction
on Oregon Highway 18, traffic
was up 13 per cent. At Midland,
six miles south of Klamath Falls
on U.S. 97, there was a 7.7 per
cent gain.

useful advice, but Martin re
fuses to take it.
As for Martin's accusation lhat
I try to "talk him down," that's
ridiculous. I love him very much
and want everybody to think
the world of him, as I do. That's
why it hurts me when he gets
into a mess.
Th Council: The sad truth
here is that both Martin and
Lucy are largely right in their
complaints. If the fault were
one-sided, it would be relatively
easy to get the person at fault
to mend his ways. But both peo
ple here are deeply at fault, and
mending things will not be easy.
Martin has had his "ups and
downs" and hasn't given Lucy
an easy time of it, but he ex
pects Lucy to be a model of dis
cretion and to keep all the pent
up dissatisfactions and disap
pointments inside of her, while
radiating confidence and cheer
fulness all around her, to reflect
favorably on him.
Lucy is obviously burned up
over the disappointments and
frustrations of their married
life and no doubt resents her
husband's failure to do better
for the family in a material way.
It is useless to argue which
one of these two committed the
original offense of resenting and
misunderstanding the other, but
the fact is that they are now
caught up in a vicious cycle of
recrimination and resentment.
We are not at all immodest when
we admit that we're not at all
sure we have any sure-fire advice.
We do suggest, however, that
Martin and Lucy face the facts.
They have four children in com
mon, still have some respect and
love for each other. They can
improve their lives if each one
is willing to forget about the
other's faults and concentrate
on remedying his own.
Suppose Martin, instead of re
senting Lucy's "blabbing," were
to ask her what Mr. So-and-so
thought about his problem. It
might possibly have the effect
of inducing her to be more cau
tious about ' talking too freely
to outsiders. I
Lucy, on the other hand,
should stop nagging Martin to j
quit trying to be self-employed
and to surrender to a job. When
she does that, she attacks his
self-confidence and self-respect.
All of this advice is easy to
give and admittedly hard to
take. This family has suffered
ten years of steady deteriora
tion, and it will take hard and
wise effort to change the trend
for the better.
