doing it, or pay any attention
to her. or appreciate her affec
tion? What, also, can she do
when she'd give anything to
have her husband do these same
things to her, and he never
does?
"He did a little of this for a
few years after our marriage, ;
but then his affection seemed :
to wear off, and now all his:
urges to love are gone. If I am
affectionate, he growls and says,
Leave me alone'."
The woman fears there is
nothing she can do about it,
but she is so lonely and so
hungry for love.
My heart goes out to people
like her; and I am sorry, also,
for her husband because he, too, ,
is missing much that he might
have in rich abundance. It is ;
hard to say always why such :
things happen; even the two
people concerned can seldom
agree as to why they came to
be living largely apart in their
house. As I have said several 1
times in this column, there are I
millions of both men and women 1
who were not born to get affec- j
tionate with anyone. They never j
care to reach out and touch even i
their child, and many are dis-:
tressed when anyone touches j
tnem. Many of these persons are
schizoid, and relatives of
schizophrenics.
To illustrate, a woman came
to see me because she is worry
ing terribly and feels as if she
were headed for a nervous
breakdown. She is sad because
she cannot show her kind hus
band the affection she would
like to give him. I asked, "Did
your parents ever show you any
affection?" and she sid, '"No,
Dad was never affectionate, and
I cannot remember a time when
Mother ever cuddled me, kissed
me, tucked me up in bed, or
showed the least sign of love for
me. Dad came to hate her be
cause, also with him, she never
showed any sign of affection.
Because of this, they were al
ways quarreling bitterly." I
asked, '"What happened to your I
mother?" and my patient said, !
"She withdrew more and more
from life and eventually had to
be put into a mental hospital.
My sister is also in a mental j
hospital with schizophrenia."
Many readers may ask,. But
why discuss so unhappy a sub
ject?" and my answer is be
cause I get scores of letters from
men and women who cannot
understand why their spouse is
so unaffectionate and so un
touchable. There are, of course,
several reasons for this, but one
of the commonest ones is that
the person is schizoid, and has
inherited a small amount of a
tendency that wrecked the san
ity of some ancestor. Fortunate
ly, most schizoids seem to get by
without even getting so bad as
to need any hospitalization.
Often two schizoids marry,
which may be all right for them,
but it can be terribly hard on
any children they may have.
These children can be born a
schizophrenic, or they can just
suffer from lack of affection.

some two million alumni will
muster in for a massive home
coming reunion at the nation's
oldest and largest naval train
ing center. Great Lakes.
The Navy has invited such fa
mous alumni as Jack Benny, Bob
Feller, Larry Doby, Ray An
thony, Tony Zale, George Halas
and Harold E. Stassen to return
here during the reunion period
that ends Oct. 7.
A Navy spokesman said the
training center has invited grad
uates of the last 46 years, and
added that each week a different
one of the 21 midwestern states
served by the base will be hon
ored. At the time of dedication,
Great Lakes had 39 buildings, a
capacity for 1,500 men and only
600 boots (recruits) in training
on a tract of land equaling 172
acres.
Today, the training center has
775 buildings on more than 1,500
acres of land, and during a peak
month in 1944 had a census of
close to 104.000 men. , j
At present there are 17 service
schools in operation with a com-.
plement 1f 6,000 boots, plus !
about 4.000 men. including offi-!
cers from foreign countries. The ;
spokesman said that during sum
mer months, the number almost
doubles when- reserves return
for refresher courses.
