Brooklyn Threatens To Grab
Leadership in National Loop
By MILTON RICHMAN
United Press Sporti Writer
The Brooklyn Dodgers, are
sticking pins in the World Series
balloons of all the contenders to
day and threatening to take
over the National league pen
nant party themselves.
Walt Alston's crew has been
busy killing off the contenders
since the All-Star break. The
Dodgers resumed play by de
feating Cincinnati twice, then
they swept a two-game scries
with Milwaukee.
And Tuesday night they top
pled the high-riding Cardinals.
7-3, for their fifth victory in a
row a they climbed within a
game of the lead.
Duke Snider has been the
Dodgers' chief hatchetman with
four home runs in the last five
games. He blasted his 20th of
the season with one on in the
fifth off Lindy McDaniel to
highlight a four-run rally that
helped reliever Carl Erskine to
his third victory. Gil Hodges
aNo homered for Brooklyn.
NL Pace Tightens
The Brooklyn triumph tight
ened the National league race
so that only one game separated
the first four clubs. Milwaukee
defeated first-place Philadelphia
6-2, and the Giants beat the Red
legs, 6-1. Pittsburgh topped Chi
cago, 5-4, in the completion of
a game suspended June 16, then
beat the Cubs, 5-3, in a regularly
cUfduled contest.
The Yankees Increased their
American league lead to four
games with a 10-4 triumph over
the Tigers In 10 innings; Balti
more licked the While Sox, 3-1;
Boston edged Kansas City, 4-3,
and Cleveland defeated Wash
ington, 0-3.
Home runs by Hank Aaron
and Del Crandall helped War
ren Spahn gain his 10th victory
at the expense of the Phillies
although the veteran southpaw
also needed a brilliant ninth-in
ning catch by right fielder Andy
Pafko with the bases full. Har
vey Haddix was the loser.
Ruben Gomez of the Giants
set down the Rediegs on six
hits as Daryl Spencer hit a pair
of homers for New York and
Eddie Bressoud added another.
Hal Jeffcoat started for the Red
IgKt and gave up eight of the
Giants' 13 hits. Willie Mays col
lected four of them.
Frank Thomas fattened up on
Chicago's pitching in both Pirate
victories. Thomas' 13th homer of
the year in the seventh inning;
won the suspended game -which
'was resumed with the score
tied 4-4 in the seventh. Then, in
the regular game, Thomas doub
led home two runs in a three
run seventh and added a single
in a two-run eighth as Bob
Friend went the distance for his
seventh victory.

Steve Bilko Sparks
Angels To Triumph
By JIM HEALY
United Press Sports Writer
Steve Brlko did everything
but empty the water bucket and
c3rry out the bats Tuesday night
as the Los Angeles Angels
smacked Vancouver to the tune
of 10-4.
The loss put San Diego in a
tie for second place, with the
Mounties. The Pads, pitted
against Hollywood this week, did
not play.
Bilko batted in six of the An
gel runs with two home runs
and a single. The first round
tripper in the second inning,
brought in three runs and the
other, in the sixth, brought in
another two. Earlier in the same
frame he clouted a single into
left field that brought in anoth
er tally.
Jim Fridley also homered for
the Angels in the first and Joe
Frazier, put one out of the park
for Vancouver with one on.
Only The Second
It was Los Angeles' second
win over the Mounties in 11
games this season. Bill George
(3-1) got the win; Charlie Bea
mon (7-7) the loss.
In other games, San Francisco
rolled out its let's-beat-Portland
bandwagon, dumping the Beav
ers 7-3. It was the eighth straight
win by the league leaders over
seventh place PorUand. Sacra
mento downed Seattle, 1-0 in
the only other game.
The Beavers put up a close
light until Bill Renna uncorked
a grand-slam home run in the
sixth that broke the game wide
open.
Frank Carswell homered in
the sixth for two Beaver runs.
The other came earlier when
George Freese doubled in Luis
Marquez.
Prout Wins
The Seals collected runs in
the fourth and fifth innings.
Bill Prout 18-year-old Seal won-
aerboy, collected the win, his
second against one loss. John
Carmichael, (6-9), was the loser.
The Solons, still ambling
along in last place, downed Seat
tle behind the three hit pitching
of winner Bud Watkins
The only run was scored when
Artie Wilson tripled in the op
ening frame and scored on Jim
Westlake's single. Loser Bud
Podbielan gave up nine hits. In
the ninth first baseman Jim
Westlake was tossed out after
a beef over whether Rainier Ed
die Basinski was safe on first.
