Leaning Tower Problems Studied

prevent the leaning tower of
Pisa from leaning too far are be

ment authorities.
The first plan, submitted by
Prof. Giulio Penta, calls for re
inforcement of the tower's base
by drilling a series of holes and
filling them with cement. This,
he says, would reduce the load
of the structure on the sinking
ground of its foundation.
Prof. Armando Donato sug
gested the more radical remedy
of building a cement platform
around the foot of the structure
and letting the tower rest on a
series of horizontal cement cross
pieces anchored to the platform.
The suggestions were submit
ted after newspaper predictions
that the tower, one of Italy's
biggest tourist attractions, would
collapse by the end of this cen
tury if its present rate of slant
was not checked.
But the history of the tower,
completed in 1350 by architect
Tommaso Pisano, Is filled with
alternate periods of concern and
optimism. First doubts were
voiced in 1550. Since 1907 four
government commissions have
studied the problem with no
effect.
