    Chemical Agent in
Cigarette Smoke May
Be Lung Cancer Cause
Washington m U.S. Sur
geon General Leroy E. Burney
said today government scientists
have found a chemical agent in
'cigarette smoke which they sus
pect may cause lung cancer.
Burney, in an interview with
the United Press, identified the
substance as benzopyrene. He
said it is formed when the aro
matic oils in tobacco are burn
ed at a high temperature and
"cracked" much like crude oil
is cracked to make gasoline.
The chief of the Public Health
Service emphasized that "no one
has definitely isolated the cause
of lung cancer." But he said re
searchers believe "excessive and
prolonged" exposure to ben
zopyrene may be it.
Cites High Temperatures
Burney said benzopyrene was
found in significant amounts
only in cigareete smoke because
only cigarettes burn at high
enough temperatures 800 to
815 degrees Fahrenheit to
crack the aromatic oils. Pipe to
bacco and cigars burn at much
lower temperatures, he said.
Last week Burney issued a
' statement declaring there is "in
creasing and consistent evi
dence" that "excessive" ciga
rette smoking is one of the
causes of lung cancer. The Pub
lic Health Service made no
recommendation to the public
as to how it should act on this
information.
Asked by a reporter whether
the statement was a warning,
Burney said:
"It amounts to a warning to.
stop smoking cigarettes, but we
would like to have more posi
tive proof before issuing a warn
ing as such."
See Your Doctor
He said the Public Health
Service's present aim is to trans
mit scientific findings on cigar
ettes to state and local health
officials so physicians can ad
vise their patients on an indivi
dual basis.
In other words it you want
to know what to do about ciga
rette smoking, see your doctor.
"In our cigarette research la
boratory we have 16 scientists
and 13 are continuing to
smoke cigarettes," Burney com
mented. "I guess they feel this
is a personal decision and will
take the chance.
Burneys aid it "might be dif
ficult" to get the aromatic oils
out of cigarette tobacco to make
them safe if benzopyrene is prov
ed a cause of cancer.

No Decision Made

Washington (W Navy
Undersecretary W. B. Franke

recommendation has been made
to the chief of naval operations

to a 42nd st. Railway Express
office Saturday afternoon by
two men, each about 28 years
old, whom police believe were
hired messengers unaware of
the trunk's contents.
The corpse was discovered
five hours later when express
workers, suspicious of the strong
odor emanating from, the trunk,
forced the lock.
A medical examiner said Mal
loy had been dead about 24
hours when his body was dis
covered. The small trunk 35 inches
long, 15 inches deep and 20
inches wide was addressed to
a "Hal Jefferson" of the Ambas
sador hotel in Los Angeles. But
hotel officials said no person by
that name was registered at the
Ambassador, nor was there any
record of anyone by that name
having stayed at the hotel.
Good Description
Police received good descrip
tions of the men who delivered
the trunk to the express office
by car.
They remained in the office
about 25 minutes while a clerk
weighed and insured the black
tin trunk. After paying $40.92
for the shipment with $50, one
remarked:
"Let's go out and drink the
rest up."
