Cancer and Obesity
Dr. Samuel H. Waxier, of Stan
ford university, found that in a
certain breed of mice 35 per
cent got cancer of the breast.
When these mice were made
obese, 62 per cent of them would
get cancer of the breast. Also,
the fat ones got it in 252 days,
instead of 333 days as in the
case of the thin ones. What can
be cheerin? to many a stout
woman is the fact that fattening
did not induce the production
of cancer in mice lacking the
hereditary factor which helps to
produce cancer. In other words.
getting fat may make it easier
for a woman to get cancer if
she comes of a family with a
tendency to, cancer.
A Cancer of the Eye
One of the most distressing
things that can happen to par
ents with a lovely small child
is to have a cancer form in one
of his (her) eyes. Then the peo
ple have to tell the doctor to go
ahead and remove the eye. This
is an awful decision to have to
make and to make quickly.
Now. Dr. Harold F. Falls, of
the University of Michigan,
urges the parents of such a child
not to try to have more chil
dren, because, as he says, half
of any more that they might have
could have the disease.
Medical Insurance Costs
May Go Up

of the Philadelphia County Medi
cal Society, recently deplored
the fact that many persons carry
ing medical insurance, whenever
they need an examination, in
sist on their doctor's sending
them into a hospital because
only when there can they col
lect. As Dr. Hadden said, we
physicians hate to see persons
doing this because eventually
all of the insured must pay extra
for this service, and eventually
the insurance costs will have to
go up.
This sort of thing happens
whenever people get medical
services prepaid. They are al
ways hoping to get some of their
money back. Believe it or not.
but I have had medically in
sured persons ask me to send
them into a hospital for an un
needed tonsillectomy. "Why?" I
asked; and they said. "I have
been paying-in for a long time,
and now I want something back!"
Aren't we humans funny?
Doctor Alvarez hopes his
readers will understand that it
would be impossible for him to
answer requests for information
or to attempt to diagnose by
mail.

Navy Helicopter
Crashes Killing One
Washington HP) One man
was killed and five injured
when a Navy helicopter crashed
while attempting to land
at McMurdo Sound in the Ant
arctic. A Navy Department spokes
man said three of the injured
were in critical condition.
The helicopter apparently
crashed when frost and ice on
the windshield caused the pilot
to misjudge his altitude. The
helicopter was landing to refuel
near the naval air facility sta
tion at McMurdo Sound.
