The largest living' bird in the
world is the African ostrich
the only sizable flightless bird
living in a country beset by large
preying mammals such as lions.
And for good reason: standing
-even to eight feet tall and
blessed with keen vision it can
usually spy its foe; and then it
can usually elude it by running
making good about 40 miles
an hour.
A curious angle of the ostrich's
life on the plains is that zebras
and gnus often accompany it.
Perhaps because of its height and
keen vision, it is particularly
sensitive to distant threats of
danger and thus these mammals
are able to achieve safety to a
degree impossible by their own
efforts. And whenever the os
trich moves off warily, its "asso
ciates" follow its example.
A large ostrich may weigh
300 pounds and can kick (for
ward, of course) with the power
of a mule. It has been known to
break a human's leg.
In times past, a much larger
bird existed and not more than
6,000 years ago either. This was
the elephant bird of Madagas
car. It may have been nine feet
tall and its bones were massive
quite likely the bird weighed
a half ton. Its eggs, which have
been found, measure from 12-13
inches and probably weighed
about 18 pounds each.
The bird with the greatest
wingspan 11 feet plus is the
albatross which spends its whole
life at sea, coming to land only
to have its young.

However, the largest flying
bird is our South American con
dor which can soar to altitudes
of 25,000 feet.
As, for North America, our
largest native waterfowl is the
trumpeter swan which averages
some 65 inches in length, with a
wingspread of six to eight feet.
The cob (male) averages around
28 pounds.
In contrast to these huge
birds, the tiniest in the world is
the male bee hummingbird of
Cuba the smallest feathered
creature in the world with a
total length ot something like
two inches, of which more than
half consists of bill and tail. It
takes 10 of them to weigh an
ounce.

sawmill, Ashland, will be put
j into operation for the first time
this year Monday, July 15. ac
cording to company officials.
Other Ashland area mills have
indicated they are operating
their planning mill crews but
at yet have no sawmill activity.
At the Fir Lumber company,
the planning mill is operating
a nine-hour shift and a half-day
Saturday schedule. According to
Richard Reynen, company own
er, the sawmill is currently
working on a four-day basis be
cause of the large accumulation
of lumber.
He added that during the last
two months lumber sales were
the largest in the 11-year period
hi' has owned the company.
Also operating its planing
mills are the Mistletoe mill and
the Lumber Mills corporation.
Workman mill is still reportedly
"shut down."
