Jet Planes Now In
Production Expected
To Double Traffic
San Francisco ifl Jet trans
port planes now in production
will more than double world
wide passenger traffic by 1970,
aircraft manufacturer Donald W.
Douglas predicted today.
In a speech prepared for deliv
ery at the convention of the
American Society of Newspaper
Editors, Douglas also said flying
freighters will revolutionize in
tfrnational trade n'ithin a short
time.
Cruising Speed Increased
Douglas, president and board
chairman of Douglas Aircraft
company, pointed out that in the
past 20 years cruising speeds of
present conventional commercial
planes had increased by 200
miles an hour.
By contrast, he said, the DC8
Jet transport, which will begin
test flights next year, "in one
step accomplish the same speed
gain which took us 20 years to
achieve previously.
"It will cruise at 550 miles an
hour and will be capable of top
speeds approaching 600 miles
per hour."
Turning to the field of com
mercial air cargo, Douglas said
"Turboprop airplanes now in
existence, as well as those which
may easily be flying late next
year, can carry products never
before dreamed to be within the
capability of aircraft . . .
New Concept
"Flying freiahters of this type
promise to change our whole
concept of domestic and inter
national trade."
Douglas said he was not wor
ried about lack of runway space
at the nation's airports.
"I think generally it is correct
to say that the cities which are
scheduled to have jet service
initially will be ready when the
time comes," he said. "Extension
to other cities will come in a
gradual and orderly manner."
He also predicted that by the
time jets are ready for commer
cial operation, the sound level
will be reduced "to a level ac
ceptable to the public."

Prosecution Near
End of Case in
Clyde Crosby Trial
Portland W The prosecu
tion was near the end of its
case in the Clyde Crosby conspir
acy trial here today as it at
tempted to prove Crosby tried
to use his position on the Exposition-Recreation
Center Com
mission for illicit profit.
Thursday the state called Her
man C. Plummer, a real estate
broken; Thomas Johnson, a Wil
liams avenue businessman, and
Attorney C. R. Sloniger to de
scribe the part they played in
property transactions at a site
proposed for the $8,000,000 E-R
center. The state has accused
Crosby of using his position on
the commission to enter a con
spiracy to realize a profit on the
transactions.
No Part in Transaction
It was pointed out that Plum
mer and Sloniger had no part in
the transactions described earl
ier in the trial by racketeer
James Elkins. Plummer was
hired by Johnson to pick up op
tions in the E-R site area and
Sloniger was retained to draw
up a partnership agreement be
tween Elkins, Johnson and
Joseph P. McLaughlin of Seattle.
Johnson himself is under a simi
lar conspiracy indictment.
Thursday Johnson switched
details of his story regarding the
time that Elkins first contacted
him about property options, re
porting first that it was in Janu
ary of 1955 and then saying it
was in June of that year.
Plummer testified he never
heard Crosby's name mentioned
in connection with the options
he was hired to obtain.

Oregon Caves Established
As Monument 43 Years Aao
Guidance about retirement is
given in manuals at the Medford
public library.
It was on July 12, 1909 48
years ago today that President
William Howard Taft signed the
proclamation which established
Oregon Caves National Monu
ment. Located in the heart of the
Siskiyou mountains, the Oregon
Caves are about 4,000 feet above
sea level. A few million years
ago, however, this entire area
lay beneath a warm, shallow
sea. It was then that limestone
was laid down under the water.
Later, as this land lifted and
mountains formed, heat and
great pressure changed the lime
stone into marble. Since that
time, water has seeped down
through cracks and hollowed out
the marble to produce rooms and
passageways at several levels
within the mountains, thus form
ing one of the few marble caves
in the United States.
The caves, popularized by Joa
quin Miller as the "Marble Halls
of Oregon," have been known
since 1874 when Elijah Davidson
followed a wounded bear into an
opening that led into the Caves.
The Monument was placed un
der the jurisdiction of the U.S.
forest Service, and it was not
unui iaa mat tne area was
transferred to the national park
service and its administration
delegated to the superintendent
of Crater Lake National park.

Officer Arrests
Brother for Rape
Chino, Calif. (IP) A police
officer said today he made up
his mind that "I must perform
my duty" when he arrested his
younger brother on charges of
raping a 19-year-old mother.
The officer, Assistant Police
Chief Edward Cisneros, placed
his brother, Joseph Cisneros, 21,
under arrest Wednesday.
"The fact that he is my
brother has nothing to do with
the performance of my duty,"
the officer said. "The courts will
decide the extent of his punish
ment."
Joseph was arraigned Thurs
day on the rape charges. He told
his brother, who was in court,
"I don't know why I did it."
Police said Joseph Cisneros,
married and the father of a
small child, attempted suicide by
slashing his wrists and taking a
handful of aspirin tablets early
Monday after the victim, whose
name was withheld, was at
tacked.
Joseph then was hospitalized
for observation and treatment.
His elder brother said he became
suspicious and after question
ing Joseph at the hospital placed
him under arrest. Police said the
suspect later confessed to hold
ing a knife to the victim's throat
and assaulting her.
