There is many a patient who,
when told that he or one of his
loved ones has a rare disease
that he has
never heard of
before, wants
to learn every
thing he can
about it. I am
sorry to say
that usually
when he turns
to his doctor
for the infor-

busy man says he just hasn't the
time to stop and give a lecture
on the subject.
Then the man may go to the
public library to see what he can
find. Sometimes he gets the in
formation he needs, but at other
times he gets somewhat misin
formed and hence badly upset.
The trouble is that his boy
may have had, let us say, a
mild attack of infectious monon
ucleosis, and by the time he gets
to the doctor he .nay be well on
his way to recovery. But when
his father goes to the library he
may read that, in rare cases of
an unusually severe type ser
ious complications can ensue.
With this, he may become ter
ribly alarmed and very pessimis
tic, when there was no need for
this.
I am reminded of what wise
eld Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes
once wrote. He said that a patient
is entitled to know the truth
about his disease, but not neces
sarily all of the possibly very
disturbing truth that the doctor
knows. For instance, if a man
has an easily cured cancer of low
malignancy, why tell him all that
can happen to a person with an ;
almost incurable cancer of high i
malignancy?
Dr. Holmes used to tell the
cute story of a worrisome patient '
of his whom he found in the j
Boston Medical library reading
up on his disease. Holmes touch-!
ed him on the shoulder and
said, "Look out, old man, see
to it that you don't die of a mis
print some -lay!"
Protecting Eyes In School Shops
Recently, the National Soc
iety for the Prevention of Blind- j
ness (1790 Broadway, New York '
19, N.Y.) pointed out that al
though for some time factories
have been insisting that work
men in their shops wear goggles
to protect their eyes from fly
ing fragments of metal, such gog
gles are not yet compulsory in
the shops and laboratories of
high schools and colleges. As a
result, terrible things happen.
An able physician, was blinded
one day because of a small ex
plosion in his basement laborato
ry. If he ha"d spent S2 for a pair
of protective glasses, he would
not have lost his eyes.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.

hormone, claimed to be 100 per
cent effective as an oral con
t r a c e p tive, will be on sale
throughout the nation by fall,
the New York World-Telegram
and Sun reported today.
The U.S. Food and Drug Ad
ministration already has approv
ed the the pills though only
a; aids for menstural ills and
they are now being sold on pre
scription in California, accord
ing to the Scripps Howard paper.
Tests Successful
It said the pill has successfully
prevented conception in exten
sive tests in Japan and leading
hospitals throughout the United
States, according to a spokes
man for G. D. Searle and Com
pany of Lindenhurst, N. J., the
manufacturers.
The manufacturer also called
attention to the fact that it was
not marketing the pill as a con
traceptive but only as a treat
ment for menstrual ills.
The pill, known as enovid, is
one of several similar pills be
ing developed i n d ependently
throughout the nation, the story
said.
The pill is said to prevent
ovulation when taken every day
from the fifth to the 25th day
after menstruation. This pro
cedure must be repeated every
month to be effective.
Must Be Used With Care
The newspaper quoted several
medical authorities who warned
that the pills must be used with
the utmost care because of the
possibility of side effects. j
It quoted a spokesman for the
New York Academy of Medicine :
that it was conceivable the pills !
could permanently arrest ovula
tion and that women who wanted
tn become pregnant at a later
date might not be able to.
