Nineteen measle cases were
reported during the week end
ing July 5 which continues the
decline in the number of cases
reported. Dr. A. Erin Merkel,
Jackson county public health
physician, has reported.
This is a decline from the 36
and 42 cases reported weekly
this winter, a health department
spokesman said. However, the
measles epidemic continues
throughout Oregon, the spokes
man noted.
Of the 19 cases. Medford re
ported seven, Ashland seven.
Phoenix four, and Shady Cove
one.
Other cases communicable dis
eases reported in Jackson county
during the. week were: German
measles (three day), Medford
one, Ashland one; chicken pox,
Medford three. Ashland four;
influenza, Medford, two cases;
strep throat, Medford, one case.

Famed Cellist Said

famed cellist's rate of recovery
from a heart attack April 16.
Casals visited an exhibit at
the University of Puerto Rico
Monday night, his first appear
ance at a public affair since the
attack. The 80-year-old Span
ish musician now practices the
cello daily and takes- walks
along the seashore.
Bids Called for
New Lookout Tower
Portland Bids will be open
ed at 2 p.m. July 19 in Portland
by the forest service for con-
struction of a lookout tower at
Hall Point in the Rogue River
National forest.
The forest service plans to
build several other lookout tow
ers in Oregon and Washington,
it was reported.
Towers will be perfabricated
treated timber for structures of
20. 30 and 41-foot heights and
approximately 1 5-foot square
dimensions. Prefabrication, how
ever, is not complete and some
furnished materials will have
to be cut at each site, the forest
service said.

Miss O'Hara charged Tuesday
in a Superior court suit that she
and her family suffered "great
mental anguish" as a result of
an article about her in the
March, 1957 issue of the maga
