Arch Moore
Must Sign
By Saturday
Grand Rapids, Mich (IP!
Archie Moore must sign by Sat
urday for a defense of his light
heavyweight title or be stripped
of the 17d-pound crown. Na
tional Boxing association Presi
dent Floyd Stevens said today.
The aging Moore's title was
supposed to have been vacated
Sunday but Stevens agreed to
give the champion until Satur
day to sign for a defense after
a plea by Charlie Johnston, man
ager of the light heavyweight
king.
Anthony Bout Possible
Stevens said Johnston called
him July 4 and "told me a bout
with Tony Anthony was all but
signed. He said he needed more
time to tie up television details
so I've made up my mind to
wait until Saturday."
However, Stevens pointed out
that Moore won't actually have
to defend his title until August
30 because he understands that
was the defense deadline set by
the World Boxing Commission.
But the NBA president said he
will stick to his demand that
Moore sign for the defense by
Saturday or lose the title-

Luke Easter of Buffalo and
Toronto's Rocky Nelson, well
traveled veterans of the road be
tween the minors and the ma
jors, are hitting home runs far
and often in an attempt to earn
another trip up.
Both southpaw-swinging first
basemen contributed decisive
home runs Sunday to lead their
teams to victory in the Interna
tional league. Easter slugged a
grand slammer to pad Buffalo's
6-0 winning margin over Roches
ter after the Red Wings had
tripped Buffalo, 6-3, in their
double-header opener.
Tiei Up Game
Nelson bashed a game - tying
ninth-inning homer in Toronto's
5-4 opening game victory over
Montreal that gave the Leafs a
twin bill split. Montreal took the
nightcap, 6-2, behind Fred Kipp.
Havana's Manny Cueller won
his fifth straight game, 9-1, over
Richmond after the Vees had
taken the opener, 4-3. A super
lative five-inning relief stint by
Satchel Paige gave Miami a 4-3
decision over Columbus. The
Jets, powered by the six-hit
pitching, of George O'Donnell,
won the second contest, 3-1.

Posedel Has
No Regrets
At Portland
By SCOTT BAILLIE
San Francisco IP) It's a diz
zy drop from the St. Louis Car
dinals to seventh-place Portland
in the Pacific Coast league but
Manager Bill Posedal insists
that he has no regrets over mak
ing the jump.
Posedel changed jobs early
this season,' giving up his spot
as a pitching coach with the red
hot Redbirds to become fresh
man manager of a minor league
club that was seventh ,the day
he arrived and still is.
"This was my first chance to
manage my own team and I
couldn't resist the challenge,"
said the deep voiced "Barnacle
Bill" who starred as a right
handed screwballer for the Bos
ton Braves a generation ago.
And he managed to smile al
though Portland was fresh from
dropping two straight double
headers. "I put in 18 years in the ma
jors and decided it was time to
come home to the West coast,"
he added.
Posedel's moment came last
May 30 after Manager Bill
Sweeney of the Beavers had
died and the stunned club had
struggled for 10 days before
naming a new pilot.
"When they contacted me, I
talked it over with Hutch (Man
ager Fred Hutchinson of the
Cardinals) and Mr. Lane (Gen
eral Manager Frank Lane).
They said it was okay to leave
if I thought I could do better
elsewhere financially," Posedel
said.
He doesn't agree that Portland
is a seventh-place outfit.
"Going into that July 3 dou
bleheader at Sacramento we had
played even .500 ball since I
took over," he said. "And I still
think we can make it out of the
second division tjjis year after
our injuries clear up."
