Southern Californians con
tinue to claim there is such an
absence of heat and humidity
after dark in their section in the
summer that they "sleep every
night under a blanket." I topped
that down in Monmouth county.
New Jersey, by the beautiful
sea. I slept under two blankets.
Speaking of cool nights, the resi
dents of Northern California
really have them. I have been
in San Francisco in August when
an overcoat was necessary for
comfort at night. As you know,
the slogan of San Francisco is
"The City That Nature Air Conditions."
That Apple
An apple a day keeps the doc
tor away. So goes the classic
claim. It has also been main
tained that due to its vitamin
content the peel of an apple
should always be consumed. A
Detroiter questions these, claims.
That is, under certain condi
tions. He says that certain chemi
cal sprays used in apple grow
ing make eating that fruit dan
gerous in some instances. His
view is that all fruit should be
guaranteed free of chemical
sprays.
Courliy
Americans presented to Queen
Elizabeth on her scheduled
October visit to this country
will not be expected to curtsy to
Her Majesty. So the British offi
cials handling the visit have
stated. The reason given is
worthy of note. These officials
say the curtsy will not be ex
pected because "the art of curt
sying is a grace American wom
en haven't got." That certainly
is a ridiculous and somewhat
snobbish statement. American
women have the grace to handle
a curtsy but it is in opposition
to the independence of feeling
the great majority of our
countrywomen fortunately have.
They feel, and properly so, that
the curtsy is a corny, outmoded
gesture.
Asking I
Queries from clients. Q. I
understand you are a little on
the heavy side. Right? A. Not
me, sir. I am six feet, one and
one-half inches -in height and :
weigh 180 pounds. Just about !
right for my height and age . . .
Q. Is it a fact that the residents
of the Isle of Jersey, Channel Is
lands, pay no income tax? A.
The residents of Jersey pay an
income tax but it is much lower '
than the United Kingdom tax. '
To be exact it is four shillings
to the pound. In our currency
that is the equvalent of 56 cents i
to S2.80. 1
Horses and Women
Why do women wear shoes
that are so tight and uncomfort
able that they have to take them
off in public places such as
theatres, sports stadiums and
even on buses? Seems to me the
average female overestimates
the importance of the appear
ance of the size of her feet. Per
haps other women view large
appearing pedal extremities with
a critical eye. But large feet
never handicap a woman's male
attraction. Anyway, if a woman
has an idea she may have to re
move her shoes in public to feel
comfortable she should have a
pair of thin rubbers, that could
be carried in a handbag, to wear
while she is shoeless. '
Asides
The spoiled darlings of the
sports world ire the professional
ballplayers. Not content with j
the lively ball as an aid to the ,
batting average they are now ;
asking for a rule calling for the '
giving of four strikes instead of:
three . . . Am asked when the !
dance known as "The Bunny i
Hug" was popular. That was'
ardund 1912 when your Grand-1
ma was a whistle girh Ask her
and your grandpa to show you
how it was danced.
