ment plant operatior fund. Cre
ation of the latter fu id was pro
gosed in the 1957-58 budget.
City Manager Rcbert Duff
said it is estimated that the pres
ent rat will yield about S47,
020.97 for the year ending J-ie
30, 1957. The principal and inter
est payments for 1956-57 were
$27,500, he said, leaving an anti
cipated balance of $124,292 in
the sewage disposal fund.
Div.rt 41 ?er C.nt
The council authorized divert
ing 45 per cent of the service
charges lor sewage treatment.
On last year's basis, Duff noted,
it will yield about $20,859, leav
ing $26,161, which with antici
pated growth, will meet bond
and interest payments of $26,-
650.
The treatment plant operation
' fund jvas created to help finance
maintenance and operation of
the plant. Previously mainten
ance funds were budgeted from
the general fund- Creation of the
operation fund provided an addi
tional $20,000 in the general
fund budget and still left enough
to cover bond and interest pay
ments in the sewage disposal
fund.
The new rale schedule for the
United Air Lines lease will pro
duce an estimated $508.50 per
month on the present basis of
five scheduled Convair flights
jer day. Duff noted. The present
monthly payment is $292 and is
based on a formula of $45 for the
first three scheduled flights, $25
for all more than three plus $1
per 1,000 pounds in excess of
22,500 pounds gross weight.
New Rats Schedule
The new rate schedule is
based on 3 cents per 1,000
pounds of gross landing weight
for the first 3 million pounds; 7
cents per 1,000 on the second 3 !
million; and 6 cents per 1,000 on
all more than 6,000 pounds.
The council also adopted an
ordinance amending the fire
code. The amendment defines i
basements and provides alter
nate methods of basement con
struction and use to reduce
sprinkler requirements.
A $38,000 contract with the
Medford Rural Fire Protection !
district was approved. The con
tract is $2,000 less than last
year, because the district lost in
excess of $1 million of assessed
valuation' protected by the dis
trict through annexations to
Medford- Duff said the district
felt a reduction was justified.

favor of authorizing plans, but
since there was not a majority

city and half in the county
I The council authorized estab

the change. Action on a request
for a 10-mile-an-hour speed limit

Police Blame Truck Driver in Accident
Copemish, Mich. W Police
tentatively put the blame on a
truck driver Saturday for the
deaths of five children and their
parents in a car-truck accident.
Trooper James Riley of the
Manistee post said he would
question the driver, Warfield
Laws, 53, who is in a Frankfort
hospital with a skull fracture
and broken ribs sustained in the
accident.
Riley said Laws' truck collid

driven by Bynum Collins, 55,

pick cherries and other produce.
Trooper Riley said that it ap

to the stop sign on the county
road and "either saw it and ran
it, was asleep, or stopped and
started again without seeing the
car."
