the state of Illinois and especially
the Chicago area as the world's
most prosperous region of the
future.
Prof. John Garland, author
and specialist on North Ameri
can geography, based his predic
tion an the "peculiar combina
tion" of advantages found in Il
linois and the Chicago area. He
pointed out that the district lies
at the meeting place of the Mis
sissippi Valley, the Great Lakes,
and the main continental east
west routes.
Chicago is already the world's
greatest railroad center, and in
creased air travel and the com
pletion of the St. Lawrence sea
way wil better its position. Gar
land said.
In addition, the world's most
productive agriculture lands are
found in Illinois and nearby
states, Garland said, and he pre
dicted that the nation's center of
population wil remain close to
its present site near Olney, I1L

At that, it was a relatively
lengthy session. The record, set
on a dull day a few years ago
was six seconds.

Piling Bridge Breaks

piling bridge that stretches
six miles across Albermarle
Sound cracked apart under the
engine of a 77-car freight train
early Friday and two engines,
two cars and five crewmen
plunged into the deep water.
Three men survived. One pain
fully crawled back onto the pil
ings despite a broken arm. One
was picked up by a fishing boat
guided by a helicopter, and one
swam almost two miles to shore.
The engineer and conductor
were missing and feared dead,
having gone down with their
Norfolk-Southern Railroad train.

weekly newspaper editors of the
region work overtime selling
and setting ads, writing copy,
and overseeing press duties.
But George Clarke runs a dou
ble operation and so far has
been able to take the work in
stride.
Clarke, 39, operate a ranch
that usually runs 200 head of
stock and is editor-publisher of
the Harrison Sun, the only week
ly in Sioux County.
Clarke said he finds that work
on the weekly is tougher than
the ranch work, with much more
pressure. He also has a difficult
time keeping help on the paper.
He has bad some rewards be

won two of the top service
awards for community service
and service to agriculture.
