tice the violin.

other people have.

Mrs. D. F. My husband
and I are very unhappy about
our 16 -year-old son Harry. He
has studied the violin since the
age of 6. He is extremely talent
ed and his teachers promise a
great future if he works. This
he refuses to do.
When he was younger, we
couldn't tear Harry away from
the violin. He wanted to practice
all the time. Recently, however,
he has heard lots of talk about
parents wanting to satisfy their
own ambitions in their children,
etc., and he says we have sel
fish motives in wanting him to
be a musician.
That isn't at all true. We sim
ply feel that it would be a shame I
for him not to fulfill his prom
ise. He'll have to do something
for his living. He was made for
music.
Harry F As soon as I was
big enough to carry a violin
case my parents hustled
me off for lessons. Why? Only
because my father had always
wanted to play the violin and
didn't have my "opportunities."
As a result, I had no boyhood
at all. I don't know how to catch
a ball. I am smaller and weaker
than all the fellows of my age.
They all go out with girls, but
girls look at me as though I'm
a leper or something. I have no
friends, no social lif at all.
I don't care whether or not
I become a great musician. I just
want to have the things other
people have. I want to give up
the violin entirely. It s gotten so
that I hate to play it. Yet I'm
bored when I don't practice be
cause I have no other interests.
The Council: Harrv anDcars to
be taking out all his adolescent
discontents on the violin.
Like most teenagers, he is
just rebellious. The telephone,
the family car or the night-out
deadline are the symbols around
which most teenagers slug out
the battle for independence. For
Harry it is the violin.
The violin is also a symbol to
Harry of nil his feelings of in
adequacy in the face of competi
tion in his own age group. He
irrationally blames his father
for having kept him small, weak
and unpopular via the violin.
In view of these facts. Harry's
parents should let up on the i
pressure. They will only succeed
in adding fuel to his hatred of
the instrument. j
They can point out to Harry, '
however, that the violin did not j

to his skills, not subtract.
In general, these parents
should encourage Harry's pre
sent interest in becoming a well
rounded human being. They
should put the matter of his
"great future'' out of their
minds for the present and let
Harry expand his personality
in as many directions as possible.
When he is happier, he will real
ize that music has become an
important part of his life. He
may even decide it is the most
important part.
