New York Stafe Needs
Woman in Office in '58
New York IIP) Indications
are that a fight will be waged
in 1958 at least to nominate a
woman for state-wide office in
the nation's most populous state.
The Italian - American Dem
ocratic organizations of New
York slate contend the Demo
crats must do this in order to
capture the women voters in
the next gubernatorial election.
The progressive group also urg
ed that at least four women be
nominated for New York City's
council in 1957.
Jack Ingegnieros, president of
the foreign language unit, said
the Democratic party in the
state has never nominated a
woman for a purely state admin
istrative elective office and not
ed that it will have no feminine
members in the 1957 legislature.
'There are many capable wo
men in public life who would
make admirable candidates to
buttress" the state-wide slate ex
pected to be headed again by
Gov. Averell Harriman. Ingeg
nieros said. He named Rep. Ed
na B. Kelly of Brooklyn, Chair
man Angela R. Parisi of the
State Compensation Board, and
Anna M. Rosenberg, former
manpower commissioner, as
among possible candidates.

I International Touch
In Sports Clothes
New York HP) American
women this summer can pretend
they're at the playgrounds of the
world, thanks to the internation
al touch in one line of sports
clothes.
New styles by Phil Rose of
California are inspired by fash
ions from four countries Mexi
co, Scotland, Sweden and Nor
way. '
His Norwegian collection in
cludes a serapi av sleeveless,
poncho-type of over-shirt typical
of those worn in the Scandina
vian countries.
Other over-shirts are designed
in bulky fleece with raglan
sleeves or parkas.
The Swedish collection is from
a line of fabrics designed by
Count Sigvard Bernadctte.
His fabrics feature Scandina
vian colors, such as "Eric the
red" and "fjord beige."
The Scottish collection fea
tures tops and pants in tiny red
and green plaids, combined with
black velveteen. Skinny pants in
black or plaid are combined
with plaid shirts trimmed with
black velveteen, or black botton
knit shirts trimmed with plaid.
And plaid lines a belted, cas
ual coat of white or cigar-col
ored corduroy.
There even are . soft plaid
shoes.
For those whose fancy goes
south of the border, the Mexican
collection "features black, white
and red pants, shirts and brief
jackets. One outfit includes
flamenco-flared pants.
Finally, there's a group strict
ly for fun such mock mink
pants and matching booties or
chinella sweat shirt, made
to look like chinchilla.
