Borers Advised
Trunks and crotches of stone
fruit trees should be sprayed or
dusted with DDT by July 10 to
control root borers, according to
I Dr. L. G. Gentner, entomologist
! at the Southern Oregon Experi-
ment station, and C. B. Cordy,
county extension agent.
I They advise use of 8 pounds
of 50 per cent DDT per 100 gal
lons (or one-four pound in 3
gallons). Trunks should be soak
ed and some of the spray ma
terial should be allowed to run
into the soil at the base of the
trunks.
For dusting 50 per cent DDT
is advised either in a small dust
er of a gunny sack. The sack
containing DDT can be slapped
against all sides of the tree
trunk and a little shaken around
the base of the tree, Dr. Gent
ner and Cordy pointed out.

Third Coyer Spray
Suggested by Agents
The third cover spray should
be completed on pears at least
three weeks before harvest, ac
cording to Dr. L. G. Gentner,
entomologist at the Southern
Oregon Experiment station, and
C. B. Cordy, county extension
agent.
Cover spray should be com
pleted about July 15 on Bart
letts and late July for winter
pears.
Dr. Gentner and Cordy rec
ommend 8 pounds 50 per cent
DDT, 6 pounds of aramite and 6
pounds of malathion, or 3 pounds
parathion or 3 pounds EPN per
acre. If European red mites are
present on Cornice, 8 pounds
chlorobenzilate should be used
instead of aramite. Six pounds
of ziram should be added to win
ter pears to help reduce storage
rots and fall infections of scab.
Dr. Gentner and Cordy advised
growers to be alert for a psylla
buildup and apply sprays as
needed. Use of a spreader is de
sirable. Apples should be sprayed now
and again in early August. Ten
pounds DDT per acre or 2
pounds per 100 is recommended.
Eight pounds aramite should be
applied per acre if mites are
present.
