America Mourned
by Leslie Conrad, Jr.
July 4, 1826, was a wild day for
vigorous, young America. Shotgun
blasts, marching bands, flowery oratory,
and Hie works rent the Summer air as
the United States celebrated the golden
anniversary of its Declaration of In
dependence. Then came sobering news. Two old
men had died. Their names: Thomas
Jefferson and John Adams.
For Americans, gaiety turned to
mourning. People forgot that these two
had once been bitter political foes,
Adams winning the Presidency from
Jefferson in 179fi by three electoral
votes. Instead, Americans remembered
1776 wh?n the second Continental Con
Bicbs met in Philadelphia and Jeffemoi
and Adm stood side-by -side in his
toric roles.
The time had come for the colonies
to break with England. A statement
had to bp prepared to announce the
birth of a nation. John Adams and
Thomas Jefferson headed the committee
to prepare the paper.
Jefferson penned the unforgettable
words that were to inspire not only the
colonies but the entire vorld. It was
the persuasive rtory of John Adams,
however, that Sold the "dangerous doc
ument" to Congress. On July 4, 1776.
after two days' bitter debate, Adams
'on approval for his friend's impas
sioned words.
But their service to America did not
end there. Each eventually became
foreign minister, Vice President, and
President. While they differed strongly
in later years, both fought unswerving
ly for the principles they helped formu
late in 1776.
With old age came reconciliation.
Both wrote regretfully that advanced
years prevented them from visiting
each other (Adams was 91, Jefferson
83), but they looked forward eagerly to
the great celebration their fellow
Americans were planning for the iOth
anniversary of the Declaration 0f
Independence.
Fate permitted them to witness tfutf
glorious Fourth. Then it aain united
John Adams and Thomas ieffersim.
